My dog ate bacon grease, now vomiting. Is she sick or grieving?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 60 lbs

My pit age 7 licked mulch where someone poured bacon grease, she threw up last night but my mom, her daily company passed away thursday and Leela was with us on her bed at the time. How do I know if she's sick or greiving? Hardly eating or drinking. No fever

I'm so sorry for your loss. Since Leela ate mulch with bacon grease, gastrointestinal upset or pancreatitis seem more suspicious to me for causing her vomiting, loss of appetite and less water consumption. At this point, I would start treating her as though she is sick because dogs don't typically vomit while grieving. You can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, then offer her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days, feeding 1 cup for every 10 pounds of body weight, divided into smaller meals. If her signs improve, you can begin mixing her normal food with the bland diet over another 5-7 days. However, if Leela vomits more, has diarrhea, lethargy or refuses to eat the bland diet, she will need to take a trip to the vet for further evaluation. I hope that she's feeling better soon!
