My dog ate an azalea flower and vomited. Is he still in danger?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Ilex can cause toxicity that is usually limited to GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc). If your dog is now happy and running and playing and eating normally, then I wouldn't do anything else. If he is still vomiting, not eating, or seems sore in his abdomen, then he likely needs medications to help with his toxicity, and if vomiting and diarrhea is severe he might need IV fluids. If he is still unwell 1 hour after ingesting the plants, and not wanting to eat, then I would bring him to a vet right away. Best of luck with your little one, I hope he is feeling better.

Poor Frankie! I'm sorry to hear that you believe she has azalea poisoning. Azaleas can cause gastrointestinal upset in dogs (vomiting and diarrhea), but can also be toxic to the heart - this can be extremely serious and may cause death in some cases. The safest thing for Frankie would be to take her to an emergency vet right away rather than trying to treat her at home, so this is what I would recommend doing if at all possible. If you aren't able to see a vet, then all you can really do at home for this problem is keep her comfortable and hydrated as best you can and hope that she recovers. If she is vomiting and having diarrhea, you can try feeding a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice to help settle her stomach. You could also try offering her some low-sodium chicken or beef broth to encourage her to drink, if you are concerned that she might be dehydrated.

As long as he didn't actually ingest any part of the plant, he should be fine. Symptoms to watch for would include GI upset, drooling, abdominal pain, weakness/lethargy, tremors and abnormal heart rate/rhythm.

Azalea is toxic to goats. GI signs appear first within six hours of ingestion, and include salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and tremors. If he ate enough of the plant, then symptoms progress to convulsions, followed by coma and death. If you aren't sure that Jebediah ate the plant, I would monitor him for now, and keep him in place where he has no access to the Azalea. If you notice any of the GI signs I mentioned above, you will need to get a vet out to see him immediately. There is no cure for Azalea toxicity, but there is supportive treatment. Activated charcoal can be given to prevent further absorption of the toxin, as well as IV fluids.

Irises can certainly cause irritation to the mouth or stomach, and so commonly you will see drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea. Once they stop eating the irises, these symptoms should resolve in 24-48 hours. If not, she should be seen by a vet. However, it could be coincidence that the vomiting started around the time that you saw Lexi had been eating irises. Often, pets will eat grass or plants in an effort to soothe their stomach or induce vomiting. This would mean that there could be another cause of the vomiting, such as dietary intolerance, dietary indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. If Lexi has also had a poor appetite during this time, I would recommend that she see a vet as soon as possible for evaluation, as she could be dehydrated.

I was unable to find a hyanthia plant by searching Google and I'm thinking that you potentially meant a hyacinth plant. Hyacinths contain alkaloids that can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea. The bulb is the most toxic, but other parts of the plant can be toxic as well. If only a few leaves were nibbled it is less likely that you will see signs than if all of the plant and the bulb was ingested. If you see any vomiting, decreased appetite, or diarrhea I'd recommend taking your dog to an emergency veterinarian.
