My dog accidentally took too much aspirin. Should I call the vet?

This is a large overdose of aspirin (four times the high end of the dose), and for such as young puppy this is extremely concerning. Aspirin can cause Gi ulceration or preforation, respiratory problems, depression, seizure, coma, and even death. I would take Mollie into a vet immediately for decontamination procedures. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. She did eat a higher dose than recommended (10mg per pound of body weight at the highest, so 60mg) but after 1 hour, the aspirin has already been absorbed by her system . Of course, you can take her to the vet now if you are very worried. After examining her they could probably council you better. If you choose to just monitor her, watch her closely for any signs of illness and if you notice anything abnormal get her to a vet immediately. I'm sorry to hear Maggie is vomiting. That is on the higher end of the dose range that dogs can tolerate for aspirin, and one of the known side effects to it can be GI upsets and ulcers. Her vomiting could also be unrelated to the aspirin and due to another underlying issue. I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her vomiting, have any necessary testing done (X-rays) and get started on any treatment (anti-nausea medication, antacid, bland diet, GI protectant) that may be needed. I would seek veterinary care ASAP if the diarrhea has been ongoing for more than 24 hours to rule out any more serious issues caused by the ingestion of the aspirin. Until you can get to your vet, feeding a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice may help with the digestive upset and reduce diarrhea symptoms. However, if the diarrhea continues, veterinary care is needed.

Hello there! The amount of aspirin you gave to Whitney is probably not enough to hurt her, however it is my general recommendation to avoid giving aspirin to dogs whenever possible. Aspirin is very hard on a dog's stomach, and can cause gastrointestinal distress and even ulcers or organ failure if given in too large of a dose, or over a long period of time. There are now lots of pain medications available that are made specifically for dogs that have less of an effect of their body, though they are only available through your vet or a veterinary pharmacy. If you have a relationship with a veterinarian, they may be willing to write you a prescription for a dog-safe pain medication if Whitney has been seen at the office recently. You may be required to go in for a visit if it has been a while, however, as there must be a recent client-veterinarian-patient relationship for the vet to dispense or prescribe these drugs safely. First of all, NEVER give a dog any human medications unless directed by a veterinarian. Aspirin is extremely irritation to the stomach and will cause gastric bleeding very easily in dogs. If the weather has gotten very cold where you are, this could be affecting his attitude. The change in food may have put him a little off balance even though he's not showing any apparent symptoms. I recommend getting him in to see your vet, just to make sure there isn't something underlying that is causing him to be lethargic and subdued. If it's enough of a change to concern you, it's worth getting your vet to check just to be on the safe side.
