My dog is on antibiotics. Can I give her oral flea medicine?

Flea medication should be fine to give as long as you're not placing a topical directly on or near any wounded areas as the medication will stay on the skin and can seep into the wound causing irritation, and as long as Goofy is not vomiting and able to keep down meds if you're giving a pill.

Most oral flea preventatives are safe to give along with topicals, but it would help to know exactly what the oral medication was and when medications were given. You may want to ask your veterinarian what flea product they would recommend in your area - in some areas fleas could be resistant to the medications. You also may need to treat your home - calling a pest control company is safest.

The antibiotics should not weaken the flea treatment. If you did not treat your house, especially where she spends most of her time, there are probably still fleas in your house and they are jumping back on her. The fleas should die once they bite her but you will continue to see fleas until the environment is treated, too. You will need to treat the environment with a product that has a growth regulator and continue to use the Advantix on her monthly.

You want to make sure your pet eats first before giving antibiotics or it can cause an upset stomach, so it’s best tot give it after. It should be fine to apply flea medication. Flea medication is very different from the other medications and I don't know of a flea medication that would interact negatively with the antibiotics and topical medication. However, I am hesitant to fully recommend applying the flea treatment without your vet's recommendation, because there may be a reason why they didn't already recommend it. I recommend calling your vet to make sure this is OK before applying the medication. They should be happy to answer a quick question like this. I hope that helps and Freddy gets better soon.

Hello. There is no need to separate these two products. There are some heartworm products that should not be given within 2 weeks of some of tick & flea products such as Bravecto & Nexgard, but administering a dewormer will not cause a problem with your flea product. You can safely give an oral flea medication such as Capstar (available OTC or from your vet) with other flea preventives. This will kill any fleas on the body within 24 hours, but will not stop flea eggs or reinfestation, which is why it is important to continue with other regular flea preventives. Making sure to clean out brushy areas, wash all bedding and fabric surfaces, and vacuuming baseboards, etc can also reduce flea eggs and fleas in the environment.
