Are annual vaccinations necessary for my 4-year-old Labrador?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 70 lbs

I understand pets must have vaccinations just like humans however, there is a such thing as over vaccination. How come I have to continuously get annual and semiannual shots for my now 4 year old Labrador? I understand the county mandate for a yearly rabies shot but these the other shots should have created immunity against diseases.

Vaccination is not an exact science and for some diseases in particular long term immunity is not generated and pets become at risk as immunity wanes. There is a fine balance between likelihood of exposure, severity of disease and anticipated length of immunity from vaccines. Some vaccines are licensed for use every 3 years, others have only been proven to be protective for 12 months . I recommend discussing local and individual risk factors with your own vet for a tailored plan
