My dog had anal gland surgery. Is Dermavet safe with his other meds?

I am sorry to hear about Cujo. He may benefit from a topical ointment such as Animax which contains antibiotics but also steroids to help with inflammation. You can talk to your vet about getting this type of medication and it also may be a good idea to have your vet examine this area to ensure it is just irritation from the diarrhea and not something else such as an anal sac abscess or fistula. Your pup may also need an e-collar temporarily if he is licking at the area.

Thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry that Oscar had this issue. You can put Neosporin on it if you would like. Typically after lancing, anal glands heal up very quickly and easily. The Neosporin will not hurt anything though so it is fine to use. If you do use it, I would get the "plus" version that contains pramoxine which is a topical pain reliever. Warm packing is not necessary, but again, you can sure do that for 5 minutes twice a day for the first few days. It may make him feel a bit better. I don't personally think Glandex works that well. Canned pumpkin is fine to do and for a small dog 1/8 to 1/4 cup once or twice a day is sufficient. Hope this helps! This could be completely normal after the surgery and could be due to an inflammation of the last part of the colon. As a first approach I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Hello. So sorry Niko Denali is having this issue. I would not call Diagel a probiotic but it is a natural product to treat diarrhea. You can certainly use probiotics along with what he is taking if you want to do that but you need to use a product made for dogs. The best probiotic in my opinion is Fortiflora. I would use that one if you can get it. Sometimes you can find it at Petsmart or Petco and even sometimes Walmart has it. If not you can buy it online at Amazon. You do not need a prescription for it. DO NOT use yogurt or products made for people. Dog "good bacteria" and human are not the same. If you can't get Fortiflora quickly enough than you can use any product made for dogs. As for taking the two antibiotics at once, yes, those are commonly given together and work well together. I wouldn’t be too worried about a lack of drainage unless you’re also noticing significant swelling around the surgery site. Neosporin is probably okay to use but it would be best to check with your vet first before applying it. It can take some dogs 3 days or more to have a bowel movement after surgery, but if Bubba seems to be straining to defecate you should see your vet. If his appetite does not improve in the next day or two you should also contact your vet.

Poor Ems! You can certainly apply a little neosporin or coconut oil to the area to help soothe it. Make sure she isn't trying to lick it. If you clean it, just gently wipe the area and do not scrub. Hello. Most anal gland infections heal up quite nicely with medications & keeping the area clean. Unless there is a special circumstance involving Tia's glands, such as the area is just not healing, additional flushing & treatment is usually not necessary.
