My dog's anal glands were expressed. When will the fishy smell stop?

Hello! I just externally drained my dogs anal glands. How long after will he stop smelling fishy?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

Anal gland excretions do smell a bit fishy- that is normal. It can take a few hours for the smell to eventually dissipate, however, it you take a little mild baby shampoo or mild soap on a moist towel and rub his behind gently with it after expressions, this can greatly reduce the smell immediately afterwards.

The fishy odor is probably coming from her anal sacs. They are fluid filled sacs on either side of her anal opening. They are like scent glands in a skunk. The fluid smells awful. Dogs can get infections in the anal sacs and they can express the smelly fluid when they are scared. I recommend having them emptied by your veterinarian to check for infection and prevent the buildup of fluid. This is most common in smaller breeds of dogs. Anal glands are normally expressed during the act of defecation. If you continue to smell the odor, see her licking her hind end or dragging her hind end along the floor, then she should be examined by your veterinarian for possible impacted anal glands.

I would take Mia in to get it checked out as I cannot rule out an anal gland infection without seeing her in person. They will check her out and her rectum to see if there is a more serious problem. And yes, I do recommend Glandex, I have seen success with it. I hope this helps.

The anal glands have openings on the inside of the rectum. Every time your dog poops, some of the anal sac content is applied to the poop. This is your dog's business card. so to speak. This is how he leaves a scent behind telling other dogs that he was around. It is likely that there still was some excessive anal gland secretion from the scare-episode and likely there is more anal gland secretion on the poop than usual. So the next poop will likely smell less. This is a normal physical event and not sign of an illness.

If the smell comes and goes, then it is most likely from the anal glands. Dogs have scent glands on either side of the anus that release a stinky liquid that commonly smells fishy. If she is scooting or licking excessively, then I would have your veterinarian check her anal glands to make sure that they are not overly full. However if the smell is coming from her urine, then I would be worried that she has a urinary tract infection and would recommend having your veterinarian examine a urine sample. Good luck! My puppy's rear smells fishy and has fluid. Should I be worried?

What you are smelling may be anal gland secretions. If one or both of the anal glands are very full they will sometimes "overflow" and then you have them exit the anus. This is a very bad sort of fishy smell. Next time you visit your vet for his vaccinations, you should have the vet examine them and empty them if necessary. If you think he has problems pooping or if he cries when pooping or if he scoots his behind on the floor, then they may be infected or impacted and need to be checked by your veterinarian.

My dog expressed anal glands. How do I clean the smell & prevent?

This is not unusual when dogs get very excited. You can wash his bottom with soap and rinse well. Make sure to get the underside of his tail. There is a product called Glandex that many dogs respond well to. I it helps to express the glands when he has a bowel movement. It is a supplement that you feed them and you can find pretty easily. Cats and dogs have scent glands on either side of the anus called anal glands. The material in the glands is very stinky and often described as smelling fishy. Most wild animals can empty these glands voluntarily for scent marking or in self-defense (like a skunk might do), but dogs and cats have largely lost their ability to empty these sacs voluntarily. They normally release these glands during defecation, but can also release with excitement or stress. So, if Ariel struggled or got excited when you moved her, she likely expressed her anal glands. It is not anything to be concerned about, but can certainly be stinky, so you may need to clean the area of the couch that she was licking to get rid fo the smell. Why does my dog still smell bad a day after professional grooming?

Hello, and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Most groomers will express (empty) the anal glands; I wonder if that's the odor your smell. I recommend washing around Wynter's anus gently with mild soapy water and see if that resolves the odor. If it continues, you may need to bring Wynter in to the vet to get checked out, as a persistent odor is often a sign of infection (of the skin, ears, lip fold, etc). Hope this helps!
