My 9-month Aussiedoodle is always hungry. Should I change her diet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 months and 6 days old | 35.5 lbs

My 9 month old aussiedoodle is hungry all the time. I feed her earthborn puppy vantage the most I am supposed to feed her according to her age and weight. Should I change her food to a more protein filled food or just feed her more?

Try spacing out the food over three feeds a day. You can also try to add extra fiber to the food, such as bran, in order to bulk it up and make her stomach fuller. Make sure the food you are feeding (I am not familiar with it) is labeled as a complete puppy food for medium breeds. If not, I would change over to a food by a company that offers scientific formulas such as Iams. Hills, Purina ProPlan, etc. Make sure you transition slowly over about a week's time.
Take Calli to your vet for a weigh-in and find out if she is a proper weight. Hunger is not necessarily correlated with not being fed enough. If she is the proper weight but keeps begging for food it is rather a behavioral thing.

Dogs will often act hungry but that doesn't mean she is hungry. As long as her body weight is good and she is not over/under weight then keep feeding her the same amount you have been. Pet obesity is a huge problem so it is best if you don't overfeed her. If you want to see if she will eat raw baby carrot or raw green beans you give her those as "treats" so she feels like she is getting something it won't be adding a lot of calories.

I think she needs to be tested for Hypothyroidism and Cushing's disease now rather than in August. You can add bulk to her food, ie fiber such as bran. This will make the food more voluminous and she may feel more satisfied. Rather than feeding home cooked food I would feed her a commercial weight reduction diet available from your vet. That way you can control the calories better. She will also need to get a lot of exercise both going for long walks and playing. Start reducing the feeding times to 2-3 times a day and do NOT let her talk you into feeding her inbetween. Everytime she begs for food, put her in the garden and close the door. Make sure you announce her feeding time so she knows when it is ok to eat and when not. I hope this helps.

Do you think her body weight is appropriate? If she is underweight, she can eat more. If she is normal, you may consider putting her food in treat or puzzle toys so that it takes her longer to eat. She may also be looking for attention. Help her get in more play time or do obedience training to give her mind something to do. If she still seems really hungry, you can try feeding a weight loss food at higher amounts - they usually have more fiber so that it fills the dog up without adding extra calories.

My 7-month-old Black Lab is always hungry. Is it a puppy thing?

Puppies, and Labradors especially, tend to be food motives and some of them can be food obsessed. May sure your puppy is not too thin, if he is then increase the food. Purina 1 is a good diet but if you are looking to change, Royal Canin makes a diet specifically for Labs and it addresses their healthy appetites! They make a puppy and an adult formula and the pets tend to do really well on this diet. Adding canned veggies can also help him to feel full. Get the no salt added variety and watch for any diarrhea as it increases his fiber. Stick to peas, carrots or green beans. My dog is healthy but always hungry. How can I make him feel full?

What a great picture of Alfie! The calorie contents of different foods vary so it's hard to say without knowing what brand of food he's getting. However, in general, a 60lb pit bull will require more food than a 60lb dog of a different breed. They tend to be very heavily muscled which burns a lot of calories, and they also tend to be very energetic. He's also young so will require more food than a senior dog. One cup of dry food 3 times a day might just not be enough for him. I would recommend increasing his canned food to one can twice a day, or you can try adding 1/2 cup dry food at feedings. Watch him to make sure he's not gaining too much weight. Also, if he still seems hungry, you may want to have him checked over by his veterinarian. Intestinal parasites and certain metabolic diseases can cause them to be excessively hungry. And some dogs are just hungry all the time, not matter how much they just ate (kind of like people). The last thing you can try is adding water to his food to bulk it up and make him feel fuller. You can also feed him vegetables such as lettuce, carrots, celery, and cucumbers to give him high fiber/water, low calorie treats.

My puppy is always hungry. How do I know if I'm feeding her enough?

Puppies do tend to have large appetites because they are growing so quickly. I'd first make sure you are feeding her a puppy formulated food. Puppies need higher amounts of calories, protein, and calcium than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food would provide that for Bonnie. I would recommend feeding her a high quality puppy formulated food, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet. Finally, I recommend feeding according to the package instructions on the food to make sure she is getting the correct amount, and avoid giving her human food, as there are many that are poisonous to a dog.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would continue to feed her the small breed puppy food at the recommended amount on the bag. Puppy food is calorie-dense, so as to meet the energy needs of high-energy puppies. You can try breaking the amount into smaller, more frequent meals (ie three or four times a day) so she feels like she is getting to eat more. I would not over-feed her for fear of early onset obesity, which can lead to significant health issues later in life. You can also supplement her diet with healthy treats during the day such as carrots or green beans. After she is spayed, her energy requirements will decrease and she will need to be fed less food so she doesn't become overweight. I hope this is helpful!

My 7-month-old goldendoodle puppy is picky. What food is best?

What a cute puppy! With him being 7 months old and a small breed dog, I think that Lucas is slowing down on his growing. This can cause a reduction in his appetite. I find that the more that we change a dog's food- the more pickier they become. I would stick with one brand, offer 1/3 of slightly less than the daily recommended amount (they sell dog food, so the more he eats the more you buy) three times daily. Give him a set amount of time and then pick up the bowl. This will create some urgency. He will eat if he is hungry. The more we change and add things, the more he will wait to eat to see what good stuff will be added. I would keep track of his body condition score- you should be able to feel his ribs with a little bit of fat cover, but not see them. As long as he is in good body condition, I would not worry. Some dogs are not food motivated and will just eat what they need. If you have any questions about his weight or body condition score, you can ask your veterinarian. I don't think that grain free food are necessary. Dogs are omnivores.
