My dog's allergies are better. Should I stop Benadryl or add supplements?

Fish oil does tend to make the coat shinier and nicer looking, which will likely be the most obvious benefit you get from supplementing. Fish oil does have antiinflamatory properties that may be helpful with the itching, but I wouldn't expect a drastic change. There has been a great deal of debate about ratios of Omega 6 vs 3, but honestly, the debate is not over, so the 4:1 ratio should be fine. I would just make sure that the omega 3 fatty acids do not get above 1mg per kg of body weight, or you could be giving above the safe upper limit. Probiotics are another supplement that are not bad to give, but is not necessary for a healthy animal. I usually only advise probiotic supplementation for intestinal conditions where there has been some good evidence for its use. Probiotics are also an unregulated product, so depending on the product, it may or may not be have what it claims; or may not have the bacteria that are known to be beneficial. For this reason, I only recommend getting probiotics as directed by your veterinarian. I hope that helps and all is well with Chloe.

You should have Diphenhydramine, that is the same as Benadryl, just not the brand name. That is the active ingredient in Benadryl. You should have an equivalent to this where you are. Check drug stores and ask someone and I am sure you will be able to find an alternative. As for the fish oils, you should be able to perform a simple online search for canine fish oils or visit any local pet store near you that offers pet supplements.

Yes omega 3 fatty acids are great for them! I would recommend a brand made for dogs. I have attached a link below. You can also give 1/2 tablet of benadryl twice a day to help with itching. You may also think about switching her to natural balance limited ingredient diet venison and sweet potato food in case it is a food allergy. This food has no grains and no chicken/beef which are the most common allergens for dogs. I hope this helps.

Poor Skyler! Since the Benadryl and coconut oil is not working, I recommend to call your veterinarian. The doctor has better and stronger medications to relieve the inflammation and can even address any underlying causes. Pets can have several types of allergies and the most common is environmental causes like pollen and dust mites. There are blood test that can be done to detect these allergens and then make a specific medication for Skyler. I hope this helps and that his skin starts looking better quickly. While Benadryl can be used in specific conditions in dogs, I can't say if it's safe or appropriate to use on Chloe. That's illegal for me to do so. You will have to give your vet a call back to see if they did recommend using Benadryl or not. Best of luck!

I’m assuming that the capsule prescribed to help with Mia’s skin and coat is a fatty acid fish oil (Omega 3 and/or 6) supplement. Yes, it is perfectly safe to put this with the Benadryl in her food at the same time. Try putting these medications in a small amount of food to assure that she eats them before feeding her the remainder of her meal. Only give the amount of Benadryl that your veterinarian directed - do not increase the dose. The Benadryl may make her a little bit groggy, but if it doesn’t, that’s ok. It’s normal for puppies to be a little hyper! Just offer her plenty of exercise and play time to try to burn off the extra energy. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Mia!

I would recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolve. I would also recommend using products such as welactin omega 3 fish oil, essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and malacetic conditioning spray. I hope this helps!
