Can my allergy-prone dog have lamb treats or safe dental chews?

I would avoid it. When dogs have bad food allergies, it's best to only stick with the food that prevents them from having symptoms. Adding in another treat could cause Charli's allergies to flare up and have symptoms again. It's best to keep giving her the hydrolyzed treats. I hope this helps!

The key to doing treats while a dog is on an elimination diet is to use treats that have the same ingredients as the food you are trying. Sometimes the easiest way to do this is to use canned food of the variety and flavor that you are using to put in a Kong or bake into treats. Other options would be to use sweet potato chews if the food you are feeding has sweet potatoes in it (which Zignature kangaroo does not) or giving dehydrated chews that are the same meat source that you are feeding (which will be a challenge for a kangaroo food). So, for the food you are feeding right now, the best option may be to use canned Zignature kangaroo to create treats for Lucy. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Brody is very handsome! I would not give any treats if he is on a hypoallergenic diet. I do have a recipe from Hills you can use to make treats with the food he is on. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Allergens are small proteins that cause the immune system in animals/mammals to 'over-react'. What constitutes an allergen will vary from animal to animal and depends on what their specific immune system 'doesn't like'. Therefore, there is no way to say any food has 'No allergens'. For example, peanuts are an allergen to a person with a peanut allergy, but not to a person without peanut allergies. In general, most animals don't have allergies to food, and unless you are seeing signs of food allergies (diarrhea, vomiting, itchy skin/feet/bum/ears)) then any food protein or carbohydrate is ok. I generally recommend a good quality large breed food with low fat and high fiber. If you want the best for Luns, talk with your vet about Hill's T/D which helps prevent dental disease and also has some efficacy at helping prevent joint disease. It is also an AAFCO supported food so you know it is well balanced and scientific studies have been done to ensure it is a good quality food. Other good food companies are Royal Canine, Science Diet, Eukanuba, etc. Find a food that Luns likes to eat, and has a good quality hair coat and normal poops. Best of luck with Luns!

We currently use the powder formulation for dogs and cats but if they have treats for cats this should be absolutely safe to try. Food allergies are due to certain proteins and they are usually animal proteins (beef, pork, dairy, etc.). Allergies or adversities to wheat/corn/soy are very rare and not worth eliminating unless you know for sure that he is allergic to them. To find the actual protein Jake is allergic to, you have to do an elimination trial. If there was not an elimination trial done, then you would be only guessing at the source of the allergies. One way I often bypass the elimination trial is by recommending a hydrolysed protein diet such as Hill's i/d. In these diets, the proteins are broken down, so there is minimal chance of them causing an allergy. This would have to be prescribed by a veterinarian though. It's actually best to consult with your vet before pursuing a diet change, because they can help to ensure the right diagnosis is made and that you are not doing anything that may be potentially harmful for Jake. The proposed ingredients for your treats are not known (do not have sufficient scientific evidence) to be helpful for allergies, but are not toxic, so you can feed them. This recipe does not contain any harmful ingredients and should be fine for the occasional treat for Pharah. Please make sure that the chicken stock you use does not contain any onion or garlic as these can be toxic to dogs. As with any new food or treat you want to ensure you only give a small amount at first and do not continue to give if Pharah has any vomiting or diarrhea develop after trying the treat.
