My dog has allergies & arthritis. Why is she licking & biting?

Licking and biting on the paws and legs is a classic sign of allergies so he may be suffering from an allergy. It could also be secondary to anxiety or possibly pain. While I always recommend that my clients get a skin scrape first to make sure there are no mites, etc, if this is negative we begin the journey to diagnosing the possible allergens. Many dogs have flea allergies. If your pet is up to date on a good flea preventative, this is not as likely. Commonly, dogs can develop food allergies over time as well. The worst part of checking for this is that a true food trial (a new specialized diet) has to be the ONLY thing you feed and can take a few months to see real resorts. Allergy medications are available now through your veterinarian's office. Depending on what they see on physical exam, your pet might be. This coulid have been a bug bite that is still irritating her. She could also be having an allergic reaction to something her skin came in contact with. If she is licking constantly I would recommend taking her in to your vet for allergy medication to stop the itch. If she continues the lick it, the area will become more raw, irritated and possible infected. Best to take her in to have this treated since there are no effective allergy medications available over the counter for itching to this degree. I hope that Skye's skin improves soon. This could definitely be anxiety. It could also be allergies. I have seen dogs do this when they are really itchy. I would try to give her a calming chew like vetrisciecne composure and a calming collar like adaptil. You could also give her benadryl twice a day. See link below. This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Bella regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.
