My dog is licking, whining, has red eyes. Is it an allergic reaction?

It looks like Tobias is having an allergic reaction. It could be to something he ate that he wasn't a supposed to, an insect bite or even contract with a fabric or substance that is causing a reaction in his skin. Try a cool compress over the affected areas to help with swelling and inflammation. I’m so sorry to hear about Poppy! Red, runny eyes and licking at anus make me think allergies (which can developer at any age). The enlarged lymph node in the leg could be many things: normal, a reaction to a cut in the foot, cancer, or other. Same for the low white cell count. Depending on how low it is, it could be normal for Poppy, or indicate an infection or inflammation. As a side note, be sure she is licking at the anus and not the Vulva. If licking at the vulva I am concerned for: being in heat, UTI, uterine infection (pyometra) or other. Overall, my rule of thumb is “attitude and appetite”. If Poppy is happy, playful, eating, drinking and using the bathroom well, then there is no need to panic immediately, though I would still take her in if not improving in 48 hours. If she is lethargic, not eating, or having any other signs, it’s time to get to the vet more immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Poppy!

Oh wow, Prince is really cute! This sounds like some type of allergic reaction, or perhaps Prince has been stung by an insect. True allergies, such as to something in the food or environment, are very rare at this age, so I would be more suspicious of a bite or a contact allergy. If he's still frantic at this point I would recommend a vet visit to rule out anything serious.

Allergies are very high this time of year. Late summer/early fall allergies due to weed pollens affect many people and pets. This is due to an inhaled allergy or breathing in the allergens. Other reasons could be due to an environmental irritant (not an allergy), bacterial infection around the eyes involving the eyelids, or some problem directly related to the eyes themselves. Any problems in this area causing eyes to be red, swollen, eyelid changes like you describe should be investigated as soon as possible. I would advise getting Buddie seen by your veterinarian so they can gather a detailed history including food/treat changes, etc and then they can do a complete examination, eventually focusing in on the eyes. Eye tests which may be performed include corneal stain to check for ulcers/scratches, tear production, and pressure measurements inside the eyes themselves. These will assess the health of the eyes and this is important since the eyes are very important sense organs and eye problems can deteriorate rather quickly. Once a diagnosis is made or suspected, your vet can discuss and implement a sound treatment plan. Good luck with Buddie. I hope he gets more comfortable soon.

This sounds like an environment or food allergy. The red is due to yeast proliferation from moistness in the hair. I would recommend a novel protein elimination diet for 40 days. Benadryl is a good anti-histamine but may not work as it only improves a certain type of allergy. Neosporin can be damaging to the kidneys so I would avoid using it. It also only contains antibiotics and so would not be helpful. Fish oils can also be very helpful at lowering inflammation in the body and improving skin and joint health.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
