Allergic dog coughing with bad breath. Is it mucus or infection?

Blue may have a chronic tooth root abscess or a sinus abscess which is causing inflammation in his upper airways and causes mucus production and at the same time may drain into his mouth causing the smelly breath. Please take Blue to your veterinarian for an exam. The vet will closely inspect the teeth for damage and tartar, the gums for swelling and inflammation and may want to do some xrays of the head. Tooth root abscesses require removal of the affected tooth and antibiotic treatment, depending on the extent of the abscess.

You're correct, these symptoms in a young dog are commonly caused by a bacteria or virus that contributes to the Kennel Cough complex. I would watch out for worsening of a cough, panting even in a cool environment, decrease in appetite, or trouble breathing. Bad breath is usually due to teeth and gum disease. If Precious has not had dental treatment before, then this is definitely a possibly. This often happens with breeds of dogs that have short/smashed-appearing muzzles. It can happen due to various structural deformities such as small nostril size, or an elongated soft palate. If this is something that suddenly started, then I would be more worried about laryngeal paralysis, or a polyp causing her to have obstructed breathing. Given the multiple possibilities and the likely need for treatment, I recommend you have Precious examined by a veterinarian. They can quickly narrow-down the cause of the bad breath and snoring. Poor Lucy, if her breath has very suddenly gotten worse then it would suggest to me she has either developed a bad mouth infection or is dehydrated. Considering she also has mucus in her faeces and s eating grass it sounds like she may have a gastrointestinal upset which makes me think dehydration is likely. There are always many possibilities for a gastrointestinal issues, cancer is a possibility but it is far down the lost when compared to more common issues such as indiscretion or infection. It does sound like she is pretty poorly though, to be honest with you aside from encouraging her to eat and drink you can do little for her at home. If she is unwell as an owner you have a duty of care to get her medical attention so I would encourage you to try and find a way to get her to a vet asap. Many simply treated ailments can become much more serious if left too long.

If the problem returned I would let Precious' vet know. They may want to see her for a recheck, or start her on another course of antibiotics to make sure whatever is causing the issue is completely gone. Your vet will likely want to make sure she is healthy and can breath properly before she can be given a dental cleaning as these involve anesthesia.

Hello. I’m sorry for your frustration, but some further investigation by a veterinarian is needed in order to determine what is going on. A thorough oral exam to look not only at the teeth but under the tongue, and all over the inside of the mouth for evidence of any growths, foreign bodies, etc would be the first step. This often requires sedation and dental X-ray may be helpful. Leo could also have something in his sinus or nasal cavity.....something stuck in there, a growth or polyp or just a deep seated chronic infection. Sedation to examine above his soft palate and then to flush his nasal passages would be recommended. If these things are not done to try to find the underlying problem, all you can do is continue to try antibiotics. If penicillin has been tried twice, it’s time to move on to a more broad spectrum one. However, I would be concerned that there is something more going on and the additional investigation would be best.
