My dog gets aggressive when wet. How can I bathe him safely?

It's not an easy situation and there is no simple answer or solution for this issue, all i can do is advise you to take him to a dog trainer to try and get his aggressiveness down as much as possible.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! This us unfortunate! I would first watch out for your safety, I do not want you to get bit. I would try wiping peanut butter on the tile or the bath tub and see if turning the water on and spraying around him (not one him at first) eliminates the growling. Gradually over time, if this works, try wetting him then bathing him. If this doesn't work I would ask your Vet for a short acting sedative like Trazadone to give 2 hours before the bath to help calm him some. Be incredibly careful, and if you don't think you can safely do it stop and call a professional to help catch the dog. Leave the dog alone until it is settled, then give it some treats and talk to it enthusiastic. Be patient, if the dog comes start to pet it. Try and slip a lead over its head to give some control. Then you will have to try and muzzle the dog. You can try slipping it over the nose gently, but if the dog starts moving you can get someone else to hold it tight until you put it on. Keep the muzzle on whilst you bathe the dog, put the collar on, then remove muzzle.

Some dogs really hate having a bath, and Kiba sounds like he really hates it if he won't even take treats. I typically recommend treats and soothing voices to help calm a dog down. Be sure to stay calm, and as less stressed as possible. Try giving him treats he doesn't normally get like chicken or pig ears. If it really is too difficult for you to bath him, I would take Kiba to a groomers for it. That takes the stress off of you, and groomers are well trained at dealing with dogs who baths :-)

Poor Munna! It sounds like he's frightened and uncomfortable about being bathed, which is a common problem in dogs - this often causes struggling, growling, and biting since this is the only way that he can tell you he's afraid. You can work with him to help make him more comfortable about getting baths by using lots of treats and praise, and going very slowly. For example, you might start by putting a handful of treats in the empty bathtub, or smearing some peanut butter or spray cheese along the side of the tub - let him decide to get in and eat them at his own pace. Do this for several sessions, until he is jumping happily into the tub as soon as you get out the treats. At that point, you can run a small amount of water (just an inch or two) in the tub while praising and giving lots of treats - then let him out. Repeat this until he's comfortable, etc. Gradually work up to being able to give him a full bath - use peanut butter or other treats so that he can be eating the entire time, and stop if he becomes upset. With time and patience, all dogs can learn to tolerate and even enjoy bathtime - so it's definitely worth working on :)

1) He may be apprehensive or suspicious at first but eventually accepts the person as a non-threat. Try to expose him to different people and places. Do this gradually so as to not overwhelm him. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar, may decrease any anxiety. Remove him from any negative stimuli or stressful situations before he escalates. Praise good behavior consistently. 2) Whining is the way he lets you know he is unsure or fearful of something or he wants it. It may precede the bark. 3) It may be a preference or he may have a bit of anxiety when you're gone. 4) Not unless you have an issue with it or if he does it at inappropriate times. If he is extremely aggressive while being groomed, you may want to consider having him sedated and groomed at your vet's office. This will mean that Marley is closely monitored during the sedation and supported with fluids and heat if necessary. Your vet can also perform a thorough exam, and ensure that Marley's heart and lungs are healthy enough to handle the sedation. At home, you can try calming chews available in most pet stores, and consider getting Marley a muzzle to keep yourself safe.
