My dog is aggressive to pups after tail docking. How to calm her?

I would strongly recommend to get her on an anti-anxiety medicine. If she is this aggressive when she normally wasn't before babies, she could also have something else going on. I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure she is otherwise healthy. Your vet will be able to put her on some anti-anxiety medicine to help calm her nerves. She likely being very protective over her babies or she could be in pain somewhere. I am sorry that I do not have a great over the counter or quick remedy. These things take time. You could give her a calming chew or calming collar but I am afraid these wouldn't be strong enough. Plus, I cannot say whether or not they are safe for a nursing mother. Finally, I would try to arrange a place for her to be when you have your company arrive. If you have to board her or take her to someone else's house, you may need to do this. Having a lot of strangers in her house especially if they are wanting to see her puppies will only stress her out more. I would keep her and the puppis separated from the guests unless you are confident that she is better.

I am unaware of the previous conversation. I am assuming one of Maia's puppies have a tail docked and you are unsure what to do. Typically tail docking is done with in 2-4 days of birth. At this age typically pain medication is not dispensed. I would recommend just allowing the puppy to stay with mom because she can calm and take care of the puppy the best. If the puppy is not able to be with warm I would recommend keeping it in a warm comfortable area. If the puppy is not acting right vomiting, lethargic, diarrhea this is typically not from the tail dock but still needs to be addressed by a vet. Hope that helps!

I recommend to call either your regular veterinarian or the emergency veterinarian. Aggression is complicated and someone who is familiar with Jane is the best person to give you advice. I suspect they will likely continue the medication until she is fully recovered. Then again, they could also try changing the dosage or even changing the medication since it did not make her consistently calm. It may take some time for her to accept him. If she is being aggressive toward him than you should not allow them to be together unsupervised, espeically around feeding time or any toys/bones that she may protect. Give her extra attention, praise, and treats while the puppy is around so she knows he is not there to replace her. You could also try an Adaptil collar or diffuser and see if that helps. If she doesn't start accepting him than you could talk to your vet about trying an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac or Trazodone and see if that helps.

This behavior can be hard to correct especially since she is an adult. I would talk to your vet about getting her started on an anti-anxiety medicine like fluoxetine or trazadone. These will help to calm her nerves, but you will also need to start a training program. This would be best started with an behaviorist or dog trainer. This will be a long road and unfortunately, there is no easy fix. I hope this helps and she starts to improve.

This is a rare occurrence, but can be very dangerous to herself and others of the aggression starts to become more evolved. I have had a few patients with this behavior disorder and they did improve somewhat on anxiety medications, but in time they both got worse and would severely injure themselves. It will probably take her some time to adjust to her new situation. Continue to socialize her as much as possible to get her used to being around other people and in different situations. You could also try an Adaptil collar and/or Solliquin chews to see if that helps her adjust. Good Luck!
