My dog doesn't recognize me after long absence and acts aggressive.

I hate to hear you both went through this trauma and unfortunately there is not an easy answer or easy advise to give. Dogs can suffer from PTSD type problems like people and until he has multiple, positive encounters he will not be the same. The other issue as well is that he is a large dog who is barking/growling and strangers are not going to approach him. In Hades brain, he does to want people to approach, so he barks. Of course, people do not approach so in Hades brain, he wins. He is having positive re-enforcement so he keeps doing it. This is a complicated situation that is best dealt with by a professional trainer who understands how dog's brains work. Because there are some aggressive signs already being shown, you need to stop him at this behavior before it escalates. You do not want a dog bite situation. Hello, its likely that Zeus is seeking your attention more so than being angry at you. Often dogs show aggression, by growling and grinning their teeth at you. I would apprach Zeus in a neutral environment. Have him removed from your room by another family member and meet him outdoors so that he may smell you and interact with him there. Alternatively, you can call him into your room and see if he is more friendly then. If you are still concerned that he may bite you, then do not approach him until you have someone else with you. Most often however, dogs that are protective an aggressive will show these behaviors obviously, and its highly unlikely that he is mad at you for being away for 4 days. Something must have scared her and it will take some time to get her to relax again. I would ignore her, go sit in the room with her and have very tasty treats ready. Hopefully Merida will investigate the smell of the treats and you can offer them to her. I would only reach for her if she's relaxed and not hold her if she wants to get away. Gradually she'll learn you always have good treats and she will relax and start to come to you again and then you can start petting and playing with her. Please be calm and speak softly and even play with her toys without looking at her. She should become curious and want to join in. Again this may take some time and if you are too loud or forceful it may make her more fearful. Be patient and things should gradually get back to normal. Aww, poor Nike! I recommend that you try to do some desensitization and counter conditioning here. Keep some treats in your pocket or by the door, and when you get home, call Nike and throw the treats away from yourself and towards him. You can slowly toss the treats closer and closer to you each time you come home so that eventually Nike feels comfortable coming up to you again. Take it slow, and if you notice him looking nervous, don't toss the treats closer to you. Keep them at a distance that allows Nike to feel comfortable, and only move the treats closer when he is not showing signs of stress like cowering away. I think you'll eventually be able to get him back to normal. I hope your burn heals up soon!

So, with that poor outline in mind, here are a few ideas: - Never punish him or yell at him for guarding the house from you, because he is doing what he was trained/bred to do and confusion generally makes aggression worse - Develop a protocol with your family so that Bruno doesn't see you coming or going, and avoid him inside the home as well - Start working on developing a relationship with Bruno by tossing him treats without expecting anything in return If he starts warming up to you, keep taking it slow, and always assume you're not one of his "inner circle" since you missed his socialization window.
