Why is my female dog aggressive after her male dog returned home?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 17 days old | 3 lbs

We have two dogs, one female one male. We lost our male dog for a little over a month. Today when we got him thru the front door he was so excited to see her, but she had a different reaction. Growling running then nipping him. They've always been best friends, actually when we first lost him she didn't eat for 3 days. Why may she be giving this hostile reaction? They've known each other for 8 months.

Im so glad you found your dog! She may need some time to reacclimate to him. Consider having him examined by your veterinarian since he was gone so long. Afterwards a good bath and a gradual re-introduction would be recommended. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may decrease any anxiety or aggression associated with his return.
