Can I add chicken to my dog's Hill's S/D prescription urinary food?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 10 years old | 11 lbs

10 year old shin-tzu has urinary track infection. Does she just have to have the Hills S/D food prescribed or can I give her some cooked chicken thighs that she loves Mixed in with the Hills food. TY.

The prescription diet is required for pets that have been found to develop urinary crystals/stones. If your vet detected crystals, then she must be on the urinary food or she could develop a urinary stone and possibly even require surgery in the future.

We as veterinarians are told that pets shouldn't have anything in addition to the prescription diet b/c this could potentially lead to failure of the diet to help regulate her condition. However, you can opt to get some of the canned Hill's S/D food to mix in with it.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! if Lucky is on a prescription urinary diet for bladder stones, to prevent a urinary obstruction or to prevent urinary crystals it is not recommended to mix the food with anything else as it virtually makes it in effective. I would discuss other brands that may be more affordable with your Vet. Purina, Hills and Royal canin all make urinary foods. If you absolutely can not afford it then I would have him on an all canned food over the counter urinary diet and add extra water to the canned food. This will cause his urine to be more dilute. What food replaces Hill's s/d for my cat's urinary blockage?

Hi there, a little while back Hills re-formulated their diets for urinary concerns and changed the name. The product that is like s/d is now called "urinary multicare" . It is very important that Stoli says on a prescription food designed for prevention of urinary crystals. "Over the counter " pet store foods do not prevent formation of crystals and stones which can cause another blockage.

Is it safe for my healthy cat to eat urinary food with my other cat?

Hill's (Science Diet) makes a prescription urinary s/d diet and a c/d diet. If it is SO, then it must a diet made by Royal Canin. Royal Canin S/O diet is OK to feed to all the cats as is Hill's c/d multicare diet. The s/d diet is probably OK if it is only going to be a short term diet.

The urinary care food is a prescription diet to maintain PH at a level to prevent certain stones forming. If you give it to a dog who doesn't need it, it can actually cause the PH to change too much causing another type of stone to develop. Therefore I do not recommend feeding it to your other dog.

Can my dog with bladder stones on Hills U/D diet chew bones?

I would not deviate from Blaze's diet if he has a history of bladder stones. If you are feeding u/d, there are canned versions that can be used to stuff Kongs and then frozen as an extra treat, or can also be baked into crunchy cookies to give some variety without going off his diet. Your vet can also let you know of any other science diet foods that are compatible with u/d along with treats that may add some variety.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Speedy. If his veterinarian has recommended a prescription diet, then he should stay on one. Royal Canin Veterinary Diets Urinary SO, Hills Veterinary Diet C/D or Purina ProPlan Veterinary Diets U/R are all great choices to help prevent crystals in his urine. I hope this information helps!

My dog won't eat urinary prescription food. What can I feed until the vet?

I would recommend just feeding normal dog food rather than using human food until you can discuss it with your vet. You may even be able to just call the clinic and ask for a prescription for another brand of dog food. Sometimes you have to dry a couple different prescription dog foods to see which one your pet will prefer. Hill's and Royal Canin also have similar prescription dog foods that you could try.
