My dog has an abscess. Can I treat it at home to save money?

My dog has an abscess and it costs way too much to remove, is there a way to remove or at least heal it myself?

Did your veterinarian send you home with antibiotics? Occasionally they will resolve with an antibiotic without lancing and draining. I would warm compress the area several times a day with warm water and Epsom salts and sometimes they will drain on their own. My concern with abscesses in dogs is that often there is a thorn or something similar in the tissue that is causing the problem. If that is not found and removed then it tends to migrate and have a recurring problem. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon! Thank you for using Pet Coach.

    Abscesses are pockets of infection, and they are very painful to the dog. You will need to take her into a vet as soon as possible to have it treated. The vet will need to drain and flush the abscess, and will prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection. Good luck, I hope this helps!

    If she has an abscess than she will need an antibiotic to treat the infection. You clean the area with an antiseptic wound cleaner but it would be best if she saw a vet for an antibiotic. Depending on the abscess, she may need to be sedated and the abscess may need to be flushed and she also may need a drain to help with healing. Hope she gets better soon!

    If you can, flush the abscess cavity with a mild disinfectant. Your dog might not need any more antibiotics. Take Scruffy's temperature on Monday morning. If she has a fever (higher than 102.5F) take her to a veterinarian for an exam. If she has no fever, this may heal by itself without antibiotic treatment.

My dog's abscess burst. What home care can I do before the vet?
Applying a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes a couple times a day can help the abscess continue to drain. cleaning the discharge from the skin with a mild soap or hibiclens (available at drug stores) is also recommended. An e-collar to prevent your dog from licking at the area and keeping your dog indoors except to use the bathroom is also recommended (to avoid flies). You will, however, need veterinary attention because the abscess may need to be flushed and your dog will need systemic antibiotic which requires a prescription.

If there is really an abscess, this should not be treated at home. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Yes, you can soak his rear end in a warm water/epsom salt bath or make a compress with a small washcloth soaked in epsom salt water and hold this under his tail several times daily until she gets home. This will help the area to drain, decrease pain, and help it to heal faster. Good luck!

The only thing you can safely do at home is warm compress the area, remove any scab that forms over the hole so it can drain and apply a triple antibiotic ointment. We do not recommend that you give any oral medications. He really should see your Veterinarian for antibiotics and anit-inflammatories. they would also express the anal glands and make sure the other side isn't infected. Hello! It depends on where the abcess is on Tonto but typically we drain abscesses and use antibiotics to clear the infection. Drainage should be performed under sedation to insure safety and to make sure it is entirely drained. Best to you and Tonto.

Poor Ginger! I cannot say for sure without seeing her in person, but this looks like a tooth root abscess. I would continue the warm compresses until you are able to get her seen by your vet. If this is the cause, your vet will likely put her on some antibiotics and also recommend to have the tooth causing the issue to be extracted. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon!
