Is 170 blood pressure too high for my 8-year-old Great Dane?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Blood pressure is fairly consistent across all dogs despite size, so about 120/80 (100) is the general 'normal' blood pressure. The circulatory pathway of blood is the same as well for all mammals. Body tissues --> veins --> through the liver --> caudal vena cava --> right atrium --> right ventricle --> lungs --> left atrium --> left ventricle --> aorta --> body tissues. Best of luck!

No i would not advise this, so i would not trust the results. Blood pressure monitoring has its difficulties in pets even when taken in a veterinary clinic. I am not sure why you are checking a blood pressure in such a young dog but this is not a routine procedure unless indicated by a pets presentation.

Without a full clinical history and especially echo findings it is very difficult to advise further here - HCM is extremely rare in dogs, especially of this age and DCM or mitral valve disease and secondary changes are much more common. Many dogs will have a high blood pressure when being taken due to stress (even more so than people) and in small dogs readings can be very difficult and more than 2 readings would be recommended and after a period of acclimatization to the clinic. Referral for an echo wold be recommended

A temp of that high is extremely concerning. I think it would be prudent to have her worked up further as this could be a congenital health condition. My instinct would be to focus on her cardiac output by running an ECG and completing chest radiographs. This is certainly abnormal behavior. Given his age and the fact that he's a giant breed dog (who typically do not live as long as other breeds of dogs), there is a chance this could be a malignant growth. It could also be a cyst, lipoma, or benign growth. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I would try to get into his vet to get this checked out. I hope this helps!

It would definitely help to have more information about what her specific diagnosis is, or more specific information on her lab results in order to provide any helpful suggestions. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
