Can my 1-year-old dog still learn obedience training effectively?

One simple technique can you try is introducing the 'watch me' command. Say "watch me", point to yourself, and when Jack looks at you, give a high value reward such as very tasty treat. It is never too late to take a dog to obedience school (I once had a thirteen-year-old in one of my classes!) I would recommend that you enroll Jake as soon as possible. Be sure to tell the instructor what particular problems you are having with him. Good luck!

Yes, he can still be trained. I recommend finding a good trainer and getting a few private sessions first, then joining a group obedience class. Learning with other dogs and people around is very helpful when it's in a controlled situation. Dogs gain confidence and respect when they learn obedience and can behave with distractions. They want to please but need guidance and praise to learn. Dogs respond well to a routine, praise, and treats for good behavior. In addition giving plenty of exercise so Hootch is tired every day is important since a tired dog is less reactive. I like to train with my dog and start in a group obedience class. That way Kobe learns to listen to you with other dogs around. Obedience training is fun and you'll both enjoy it. I took my dog to several different classes with different trainers as he grew up. Training can be needed for the first year or two to have a well behaved dog. If you are having problems then I'd get one on one training. Personally I only send hunting dogs away for specialized training. No, 1.5 years old is definitely not too old to be able to train your new dog and establish a routine in your home - I wouldn't worry about this at all :) Adult dogs can be a wonderful choice for adoption, especially if you don't have lots of extra time to deal with housebreaking and socializing a puppy. Dogs can be trained at any age, and generally adapt very well to a new routine and living environment. So if the dog seems like a good fit for you, I would say go for it.

This can be playful and it can be aggressive. Behavioral modification training classes can really help out with this behavior and socializing him more in public can really be beneficial. If he is a stressful dog, you can try pheromone collars to help calm him. But behavior classes are going to help quite a bit if you are able to get him into a class. Otherwise, there are loads of resources online for behavioral training for dogs and correcting this behavior. Persistence and patience are key! I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
