My 2.5-month Doberman puppy is weak. What diet & shots does he need?

If you feel like your puppy is weaker than her should be at this age then I recommend taking him to the veterinarian to be examined. He may have intestinal parasites (very common in young puppies) or could have something more serious like parvovivrus. You should also make sure he is fully vaccinated. Your veterinarian can give you a schedule of when he needs what vaccines. He should also be vaccinated for rabies at 12-16 weeks of age. Your puppy should be eating a large breed puppy food. Hello. A puppy should be examined for general health & the presence of intestinal parasites by your veterinarian now. It is never a good idea to just deworm because you may be missing some important parasites like coccidia. Vaccinations are usually started at 8 weeks of age & boostered at 12 & 16 weeks of age. Congrats on the new puppy! It is ok that he is only 11 pounds as long as when you look at him he is an ideal weight. He may end up being more petite than other dobermans which is okay! For an ideal weight, he should have waist and you should be able to easily feel his ribs but you should not be able to see his ribs, top of spine or top of hip bones by just looking at him. For his size and energy he should be eating a total of 1.5-2 cups of food a day split into two to three meals per day. Also make sure he is on a puppy food to ensure he is getting the proper about of nutrients. I would definitely discuss his weight In more detail with your vet at his next appointment. Your vet will be able to tell you whether he is underweight of you are unsure. I hope this helps!

Parvo vaccinations should be started at 7-8 weeks of age, so at 5 months Romeo is more than ready and is at risk for the virus. At 5 months he will only get 2 DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo and Parainfluenza) vaccines 3-4 weeks apart. He is also old enough for his Rabies vaccine. He may be thin from intestinal parasites. Bring a stool sample with you to your first Vet appointment and expect that he will be dewormed as well. Romeo should also start heart worm and flea/tick prevention. Aw, what a cutie. 6 weeks old is pretty young to be away from his mama. These guys are often fed by their mom until closer to 8 weeks. A good quality puppy food, probably canned or kibble soaked in warm water will be necessary. At this age he probable won’t eat dry kibble. It is best if you feed the same thing the breeder fed in the beginning. This will help with the soft stool and keep him from diarrhea. Once he eats that well, you can transition. I would choose a high quality large breed puppy food for the first year. I like Merrick, if your budget allows. If you need a grocery store available food, try Purina One. If his stool is really soft, he needs to have a fecal check with your vet as he may need deworming.

A puppy that young, if not with his mother, needs a warmer temperature, preferably above 20 degree at all times. He should start walking very soon. He will need to be dewormed, the first time could be in about a week from now and then every 2 weeks until he is 3 months of age. He will need 2 vaccinations at the age of 8 and 12 weeks (6 in 1 + rabies).

Your vet will tell you what vaccines are required in your country and area. Deworming is required every 2 weeks from the age of 2 weeks old, to 3 months old, and then monthly. As wonderful that it is that your family is vegetarian, dogs are not. Some diets that are vegetarian can be dangerous to dogs as they don't get some of the nutrients they required. I recommend that you get a dog kibble for Leo that is well balanced, and you can add vegetables to this if you like. Especially as a growing puppy, just rice and milk is NOT ok. They need a diet that has the proper nutrients in the right ratios. Please get a good quality puppy food. Best of luck with Leo! Have fun with him!
