Why is my diabetic dog always hungry and sniffing another dog's lump?

I am very sorry to hear that you are experiencing these issues with Matilda. These clinical signs, inappetance and increased water consumption are unfortunately very common for diabetic dogs. Because Matilda's body cannot handle the Sivan she eats in her food in a normal way, an excess amount is passed through her urine. The sugar drags water with it, meaning that Matilda will urinate more of her water intake and reserves then a normal dog will. Keeping her insulin medication and feed intake carefull monitored will help slow this diuretic effect and keep her more hydrated. The same issues with handling sugar inside her body can affect her appetite. If you are noticing that these problems are becoming worse, I suggest a recheck with your vet to make sure that the medications are at an appropriate dosage, and that there aren't any complicating factors present, such as a yeinary tract infection, which are common in diabetic dogs. Unfortunately most diabetic dogs have extreme appetites. You should discuss this with your vet - the amount and timing of meals can affect the effectiveness and dosage of insulin and frequent feeding can affect treatment. Most diabetics are only fed twice daily to coincide with insulin peaks. Specialist diabetic formulas can be helpful in reducing blood glucose spikes after feeding and tend to be high fiber also so Tigger will feel fuller for longer

It sounds like his diabetes is not controlled well. I would start with a glucose check and a urine test. This will confirm if the sugar is still high and if he has ketones in his urine. Ketones can make them sicker and feel bad. They usually require IV fluids and a different, strong but shorter acting insulin to help get it under control they can also do blood work to check for cushings or a low thyroid or a secondary infection somewhere as these are common with diabetes and makes it harder to control diabetes until these are treated also. Once the blood sugar stop fluctating and staying high, his appetite will come back and the drinking slow down.

Hello. Diabetes occurs when the pancrease does not produce enough insulin. Diabetes seems to come on suddenly because your pet has been coping to some degree, but now her body is reacting to the lack of insulin pushing glucose into the cells. Antibiotics do not cause diabetes, but obesity can. In general, the first signs noticed in a diabetic are increased thirst & increased urination. Sometimes the appetite is great, yet the pet will lose weight. I think you should have Chhutki examined by your veterinarian. You should request blood work, including a check of her thyroid, & a urinalysis should be run. This will tell you if Chhutki has diabetes. It could be Chase has a medical illness such as diabetes causing him to drink more but lose weight. This red bump could be a benign growth or malignant. I'd take him into a vet today or tomorrow to get these things checked out. If he does have diabetes, he can be treated with insulin. Best of luck.

I believe the disorder you are referencing in people is Prader–Willi syndrome, which is a genetic disorder where a person will constantly feel hungry no matter how much they eat. There are also other effects of the disease on that person such as behavioral problems and intellectual disabilities. As far as I'm aware, it does not occur in dogs. It's good that Fionna has been checked for worms, but there are other medical causes that can lead a dog to always be hungry such as diabetes, conditions causing malabsorption of nutrients, and Cushing's disease. I recommend having Fionna seen by a vet again this week for further tests such as a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis. Depending on the results of those tests, the vets may want to do further testing to definitively diagnose if she does have a medical condition causing her constant hunger.
