My diabetic dog ate a lot of caramels. Should I give more insulin?

My DIABETIC 9yr old, 35 lb Puggle just ate 20 Kraft caramels. Should I give more insulin? ((receives 9 units Vetsulin twice daily with meal’s)

Hello, thank you for your question.

I would not give more insulin to your dog in spit of getting into this candy. It is possible that by giving additional insulin we could make her blood sugar drop too low. One bout of significant hyperglycemia should not cause serious derangement of the diabetes.

If there was any chocolate in these candies however, I would be concerned that your dog could experience chocolate toxicity. If there was chocolate in these candies I would recommend contacting the ASPCA Poison Control for further recommendations. There is a fee for this service, but they can help determine if additional treatments are needed.

    The good thing is that this is not enough to cause chocolate toxicity; which is the most concerning thing with chocolate ingestion.

    I'm assuming that you are also worried about the excess sugar, since he is diabetic. This is actually not too concerning. It may cause the blood sugar to go up, but I wouldn't expect it to cause any major complications. You definitely would not want to give anymore insulin, because you run the risk of Bentley getting hypoglycemic, which is much more concerning than him having high blood sugar.

    For now, it's best to just monitor for signs of an adverse reaction. For chocolate toxicity and hyperglycemia the first sign of a problem would be vomiting. If Bentley starts vomiting, then it would be best to take him to the vet as soon as possible, so they can do some further testing and treatment.

I would wait about 12 hours after his last dose of insulin. I would also make sure he eats something before giving the insulin at that time. If you are not going to be up at the 12 hour mark I would recommend holding off the insulin until tomorrow. If you give the insulin now you risk his glucose going to low even if he just ate. A single unscheduled meal is unlikely to cause any significant issues, so try not to worry :) I would continue on Duchess's normal insulin dosing and feeding schedule, and monitor her for any problems. Yes, he should get some insulin now. The usual starting dose is about ¼ unit per pound of body weight. Thus, a 20 lb. dog would start at 5 units; 40 lb. at 10 units, and so on. So at 29 pounds, he should get about 7 units of insulin. Check his glucose again in a few hours and see where he is to make sure he's not getting too low. If he does get really low, you can help bring it back up by giving some honey or Karo syrup.

Dog diabetes: Can treats cause it? When to get a second opinion?
Diabetes in dogs is thought to be from destruction of the beta cells in the pancreas. It is not an insulin resistance from giving too many treats (so don’t blame yourself!) Sometimes if the insulin dose is too high it will drop the glucose too low so that maybe why he is recommending sugar water. My recommendation would be to be seen right away if he is weak, or shaky, as low blood glucose can be life threatening. Seeking a second opinion is never wrong, but sometimes better communication is really what is helpful . We Are happy to help where we can, but a good primary veterinarian relationship is really important with diabetes. Best of luck and I hope he does well!

If she is alert and more stable on her feet then I would not give any more supplements unless signs indicate that. Be sure to take her a glucose check before administering any more insulin though. I would recommend trying to feed her several small meals every 3-4 hours though to help maintain a higher blood glucose

My dog got too much insulin. Is kidney damage a risk from low glucose?
The best way to proceed now is to give Spike his regular amount of insulin when it is due the next time. From what you are reporting this episode should not have affected his kidneys negatively, as usually it is the very high blood sugar levels that cause kidney damage. I suggest giving him the regular insulin dose tomorrow with his food given, and then check blood glucose level approx. 6 hours after the dose of insulin was given.
