How to get my family's emotional support dog designated as my ESA?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Japanese Chin | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

Hello I was curious about emotional support animals. My dog in particular. My mom got our dog 5 years ago as an emotional support dog but as a kid I benefited from him a lot as well and throughout the years he's become more of an emotional support dog for me. I was curious if ownership of an emotional support dog could be given to somebody else?

You would need to have a letter of prescription from a licensed mental health professional designating you as in need of an ESA (emotional support animal) to declare Snoopy as your own ESA. There is no legal designation (or registry) for an emotional support animal. ESAs do not have many of the legal protections that certified service animals are afforded.
