How do I get my emotional support cat approved for college housing?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 10 lbs

I suffer from anxiety and depression, I have a cat and he's a big part of my happiness. I will soon be heading off to college for the first time and want to be in the dorms, to be able to have a pet in the dorm I would have to have him be certified as a therapy animal, I've talked to my doctor and she didn't know my relationship with my pet and therefore said she couldn't certify him. Is there any way at all to still be able to have him become a certified therapy cat?

There's actually no true emotional support animal certification. If you speak with your psychologist/psychiatrist or whatever doctor diagnosed your mental disorder about writing a letter stating you need the pet and then present that letter to your college. You should also first check with your college housing office about what they would require to allow your cat to stay with you.
