What's a dachshund's lifespan? When are they senior & do minis live longer?

Around 8 years old is average for most diseases to start showing up. Back problems are the #1 problem we see with these guys and that can happen at any age. Usually happens due to obesity so keep him lean! The other huge issue is their teeth. They have horrible teeth in general and all that tartar buildup can contribute to other health issues like heart and kidney disease. My recommendations: 1) Take him to your vet for yearly check-ups and senior blood testing 2) Keep him lean 3) Keep his teeth in good health That is all you have control over. Honestly, dachshunds are pretty hardy dogs. If they can survive without ever needing back surgery for herniated disks, I believe that most just die of old age. They are not particularly prone to any one kind of cancer, but they can get it, along with heart disease & other types of organ failure, just like anyone. Great question! I highly recommend Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Eukanuba brands of dog food. These four brands have veterinary nutritionists on staff to make sure the food is formulated for a dog's nutritional needs. Larger dogs do age more quickly than smaller dogs. In the case if your dogs I would say your seven-year-old is ‘middle-aged’ and would consider him a senior dog at about 9 or 10 years of age. The larger dog, Tasha I would say would be middle-aged at about 6 years old. And would consider her a senior dog at age 7 or 8. However, keep in mind, regular veterinary check up and routine preventative healthcare your dogs will have their best chance to live long and happy lives.

Yes it is ok to run with your Mini Dachshund. Each pet is a little different in how much exercise they can tolerate, so the best thing to do is to monitor him for signs of overexertion which includes: stopping often, distressed face (grimacing), excessive panting, etc. However the general rule of thumb is to do light-moderate exercise with your pet twice daily for 20-30 minute intervals. Dogs that have not exercised much should take it easy the first few weeks until their bodies are conditioned, just like with people. And since he is a puppy he should be exercised around 20 minutes twice daily until he is an adult dog (over the age of 1), then he will be able to work out for longer periods.
