My dachshund has back pain and won't move after being picked up.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Small breeds often have patellar problems in one or both knees due to anatomical problems with their knees. The other concern I would have is a cruciate ligament injury. Another possibility would be other soft tissue injuries or injuries to the bones of the leg. This can be assessed by your vet when you take Bob for an exam. Your vet may want to sedate Bob to fully assess the knee and take x-rays. I think you can probably wait but if his pain level increases to the point of him not eating, then I would advise that you take him today or this weekend. Once a diagnosis is made, a sound treatment plan can be implemented.

The first thing I think of in Sadie's breed with symptoms of not wanting to move, crying when picked up and unwilling to jump up is neck or back pain. Neck or back pain in dogs can be from a strain or sprain or from IVDD (intervertebral disk disease) which is common in long bodied, short legged dogs. I'd have Sadie see today by your Vet since she is in pain. They can diagnose neck or back pain on physical exam. As long as she is moving her legs normally (not dragging a leg or walking drunk) they likely will start an anti-inflammatory, pain medications and possibly a muscle relaxant. Rest is required for 4-6 weeks, this means no running, jumping or stairs. She will feel better before her body is fully healed. I hope this helps and I wish Sadie a speedy recovery!

I agree that Bow seems to be in pain. Although the injury could be anywhere in his body, the big concern with his breed is an injury to the neck or spine. With their long bodies, Dachshunds are prone to back injuries. I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian who will palate the neck, spine and legs to determine what area is injured. They will also try to determine if it is a soft tissue injury or related to the bones. Until you see the doctor, Bow must have strict exercise restriction. Do not allow him to do any more jumping, no running, no stairs, no walks and outside on a leash only. You must be cautious with a potential back issue as it can have serious consequences. Sadie may be having a bulging or ruptured disc issue in her back. She needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately because the sooner this issue is addressed the better chance she has for a full recovery. Disc disease is very painful and can result in paralysis if not treated. Depending on the severity of the disease Sadie may just need prescription medication and rest or if the condition is more severe she may need surgery for a full recovery. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to have these prescribed by a veterinarian. Again, the sooner Sadie is treated the better chance for a full recovery so please take her to see a veterinarian right away. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lazy! She does sound very painful! She likely has hurt her back, hips or tail. The fact she cries out when you touch her there and when trying to get up indicates back end pain. Some dogs with anal gland issues or Lyme disease can show similar symptoms. I would have her seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They will very likely on physical exam be able to tell where she hurts. They can then prescribe the correct and safest medications for her condition. I hope this helps and I wish Lazy a speedy recovery!

This presentation and the fact that he is Dachshund are strongly suggestive of a intervertebral disc disease. Possibly a disc extrusion (slipped disc) has affected him.
