What are the most common reproductive issues for female dogs & cats?

The two most common problems I would worry about are mammary tumors, which are more common the more frequently a dog goes through heat cycles, and pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus and occurs in dogs that are not spayed. Good luck on your project and let me know if this was helpful!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How old is your dog? As dogs age there are chronic changes to the uterine lining, it becomes thickened and sometimes even cystic. Metritis just means inflammation of the uterine lining and there are many causes most of which have nothing to do with pregnancy. If she had purulent discharge from her vulva that indicates an infection. A pyometra means infection (puss) in the uterus. If she responded to antibiotics I would assume she has a pyometra. My best advice is to have her spayed. It is the best thing for your dog. If she had discharge then the pyometra is open. If there was no discharge it is considered closed. I wish you the best!

By vaginal infection, I am unsure if you mean she is having vaginitis, a urinary tract infection or even a uterine infection (also called a pyometra). If she is having repeat UTIs it is a good idea to have her urine cultured and also to do some imaging diagnostics like X-rays and even an ultrasound. If she is not spayed and the infection is coming from her uterus it is very important to have her spayed as this will resolve the issue. If your veterinarian is unsure as to where the infection is coming from then the next step is urine culture and an ultrasound. In some cases a resistant bacteria is present and the culture will help rule that out. An ultrasound will help determine if there are any complicating factors like bladder inflammation, bladder stones or even cancer. In regards to spaying, these procedures are not only done to prevent them from having puppies but also for prevention of conditions that would potentially put their life at risk. With females, the risk of mammary cancer and uterine cancer greatly increases. Also, females can develop a potentially life threatening condition known as pyometra which usually needs to be addressed with emergency surgery. In male dogs, prostate and testicular problems are greatly reduced with neutering. I hope this helps! Negatives of having an unsprayed female (intact female) are uterine infections (pyometra) which can be fatal, mammary cancers, ovarian tumors, and a shorter life span because of the development of these issues. One other negative is an undesired pregnancy. Hope this helps!

A 5 month old female dog with SMALL amounts of puss from the vagina can be something called 'puppy vaginitis' which is a common condition that is resolved by having the puppy spayed. If there is a LARGE amount of puss present then a life-threatening condition called pyometra could be the cause, in which case she needs to go to a vet right away. Pyometra is very uncommon in a 5 month old puppy and most often always requires a dog to have had a heat first, so puppy vaginitis is most likely. This could also be a urinary tract infection resulting in puss from the vulva. I would have Baliey seen by your vet to be assessed, and have her spayed sometime in the next month or two. Unfortunately, a uterine infection can become a common secondary issue with what you are describing.
