Deciding between two hypoallergenic dog foods recommended by my vet?

Hi there. I would recommend asking your veterinarian if there is any other type of food that would be compatible with Riley's medical needs that might be less expensive. Without knowing what specific type of diet your veterinarian has recommended and what specific medical issues Riley has that have necessitated a special diet, we can't really make any recommendation for a particular type of food.

For an ideal diet trial for a suspected food allergy, it is typically recommended to feed a hydrolyzed protein diet (proteins are broken down to the point where they can't trigger the immune system) exclusively for 6-8 weeks. After that point, some dogs are rechallenged with their original diet to see if signs recur or started on a novel protein diet (one protein source/one carbohydrate source). If signs of a food allergy are still present, some dogs need to remain on the hydrolyzed diet indefinitely. The hydrolyzed diets are prescription based and include Royal Canin Ultimano, Royal Canin HP, Science Diet Z/D ultra, and Purina HA. There are many pet food companies online that can also dispense these diets with a prescription from your vet (chewy.com is one example). If the cost of a hydrolyzed diet is still not feasible for a diet trial, talk to your vet about starting Rico on a novel protein diet. Many of these are still prescription based, but I have also been impressed by the Dick van Patten Natural Balance limited ingredient line, which is available over the counter. With any diet trial, it can take 2-3 months to determine if it is effective and you need to be strict in that Rico would only receive his dog food with no other treats or table foods. Glad to hear she is doing so well! With full resolution of her symptoms this indicates the condition is food triggered and you have options of either maintaining her on royal canin anallergenic/hypoallergenic (with or without a few treats - try a new ingredient no sooner than once every 2 weeks and remove if any symptoms return) or trying to transition her onto alternative, sensitive diet (should be a food based on a small number of ingredients and 'fixed formula' - ie not one which is made from different ingredients for each batch - those based on rabbit/venison/ostrich/sweet potato etc can be successful). The risk is when changing diets is that she may relapse - in severe cases with complete resolution of signs then maintaining the successful diet would be my preferred option - this is a high quality, balanced diet and perfectly ok to feed lifelong

Foods in the US need to be regulated under AAFCO standards to be complete and nutritionally balanced, so most foods will do a good job of making sure your pet stays healthy and happy. Specialist foods generally are designed to treat an issue, such as a food allergy or a health problem, and are beneficial for pets that need it. As for the prescription diets your vet sells, these are specially formulated to help treat a specific medical condition like a prescription medication would. They are prescription-only because of this, and sometimes cost a bit more because a lot more research and formulation (and sometimes unique ingredients) goes into them to make them able to treat a health condition. In many cases, your vet can send a prescription for this food to an online pet store or pharmacy so you can purchase the product cheaper.

There are a lot of prescription brand foods to try. We tend to stick to prescription brands because we know they don't have any contamination of other products in the food. However, there is one food that I have seen some success with, called California Natural by Natura. There are 2 categories of what we call "Hypoallergenic" diets: 1) Novel Protein: the food is made of a protein we assume your pet has never been exposed to before. Something like duck, fish, venison, rabbit, lamb, bison, beef. The most common allergic protein is chicken not grains. So do not buy a chicken grain free diet and assume you are buying hypoallergenic, because you aren't. 2) Prescription hydrolyzed diets: These can only be bought from a Vet or with a prescription. These diets take the protein and chemically hydrolyze it to a very small size, so small that it isn't recognized by the immune system as an allergenic. I hope this helps and have a great day!
