My new 1-year-old dog needs health insurance. What should I look for?

Depending on your dog and her lifestyle, pet insurance can be worth it. Unfortunately, pet insurance is worth the most for accidents and illnesses. Often the plans do not cover routine health care, but some plans do. Most plans also have a variety of options, so you can decrease the cost of the plan by decreasing the coverage. I have a number of clients that use Trupanion who has covered $10,000 bills without any questions. But those owners have a higher premium than some of the other companies who may not cover the same amount. I wish I could give you a clear answer, but for young dogs, I think a moderate plan for the first year is always a good idea. That will give you a good idea about if you think the plan is worth it long term. I would recommend contacting 3 companies and compare what they cover, your deductible, and your monthly cost. If I had to chose a few, I would compare Trupanion, PetPlan and Nationwide, but there are other good companies out there too. I hope that was helpful. There are many pet insurances available right now, and they are all slightly different in coverage and how you are reimbursed for medical issues. Most will require that you pay the vet the full bill, and then will reimburse you a percentage of the cost of the bill, so keep in mind that you will still need to be able to pay the vet bill at the time of service. Great questions! I like PetPlan, Embrace and Trupanion. Those are my top three. All very good companies. Just contact all of them for quotes and go with the best price. Yes, on the CareCredit card. That way you are never stuck without being able to pay in case of an emergency. Just be aware that CareCredit usually gives a 6-12 month interest free period but if you can't pay off the bill in that time frame the interest rate is astronomical (like close to 30%). So, be sure you think you can pay off whatever the balance is in that time frame or you will drown in interest fees and never get it paid off. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
