My chihuahua is sleeping more and hiding. Is she sick or just cold?

Small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain which can be quite excruciating for them. Based your description of her sleeping more than normal, not wanting to do stairs and not running as much, this is a possibility. The veterinarian will examine her and determine if she is in fact painful. If so, x-rays may be taken. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help her feel better. In the meantime, keep her quiet and carry her as much as possible. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. Human diseases are rarely transmissible to pets so it is unlikely that your Chihuahua's clinical signs are due to anything that he caught from you. That being said, signs of lethargy, inappetence (not eating) and possible fever can indicate a problem. Monitor him over the next 12 to 24 hours and if you do not see any improvement you should take him to your veterinarian to determine what is causing these signs and obtain appropriate treatment.

Not all Chihuahuas shake, and since shaking chronically and excessively can be a sign of a medical issue, any shaking in your Chihuahua should be discussed with your veterinarian. Minnie could be shaking because she's cold or it could be a sign of pain. Toy breeds like chihuahuas can also be notorious for shaking due to anxiety or nervousness. I would keep an eye on her for now. If this isn't a usual behavior for her and it continues or increases over the next day or two, I would take her into the vet for a health check. I am sorry to hear about your chihuahua. Because of her age and her symptoms (lethargy and decreased appetite) I would definitely recommend an examination by a veterinarian. We can certainly see medical problems in older dogs that can cause these symptoms such as kidney disease, infections, liver disease, and more. An exam by your vet and some bloodwork may help to be sure there isn't a treatable medical issue. If there are no abnormalities found, then they may recommend some over the counter products that can help with anxiety such as Adaptil which is a pheremone product available as a plug-in or collar, Zylkene or Composure which are calming supplements, a thundershirt which is a compression vest that calms some dogs. And in some cases prescription strength medication may be necesssary from your veterinarian.

Hello. It certainly is possible that this is normal for Chi. If her eating/drinking habits have not changed, she seems well, no coughing or problems eliminating, then I would not be too concerned. It sounds like Chachi has a lot going on! What I am understanding Is that Chachi is lethargic (just lying in bed all day), he has gained about a pound and a half over the last 6 months despite eating less. He has symmetrical hair loss and is aways cold, and his vision in the dark is getting worse. You were told that the cause of the hair loss was CDA (color dilution alopecia). While this could cause the hair loss, CDA does not cause other symptoms in addition to hair loss; CDA does not explain the lethargy or weight gain. Melatonin has not helped his symptoms. I am a little confused on his T4 results. Was a whole thyroid panel run, including a TSH? Were there any abnormalities on general bloodwork? (cbc and chemistry profile) All of this information can be helpful in piecing together what the problem is and how to best manage it. An abdominal ultrasound may also be recommended to more fully evaluate what may be causing the lethargy and weight gain.
