Why is my chihuahua not moving, with tender back and tight belly?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 6 years and 4 months old | 4.6 lbs

Hi, my 6 yr old female chihuahua has a tender lower back and a sudden behavioral change in the last 2-3 hours. I've tucked her into bed where she hasn't moved for the last few hours - this is very abnormal for her. i believe it maybe be a uti, gallstones or enlarged prostate pushing on her spine? She's not yelping or crying just has a very tight belly and she stiffens up when I feel around her lower back and 'love-handles' area.. can you please assist?

Poor Pandora! I'm sorry she's not feeling well. She may have a back injury that's causing her pain. Other possibilities are some sort of GI disturbance such as pancreatitis, though a urinary problem would be possible as well. Female dogs don't have a prostate though and gallstones are not terribly common. If she's not improving over the course of the next few hours or is getting worse I would take her to the vet to be evaluated.

Two of the most common causes of this type of painful behavior are back pain and abdominal pain caused by gastroenteritis, urinary tract issues (including UTI, especially if a kidney infection), pancreatitis, liver problem (including gallstones), or others. Fortunately female dogs do not have a prostate gland, so no need to worry about that! It can be difficult to differentiate between back pain and abdominal pain without a physical exam, so I think it would be worth taking her to a vet to investigate further. Depending on what is found, she may need an abdominal x-ray to evaluate her spine and abdominal organs. Continue to monitor her for other concerning symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty walking or gait abnormalities, or anything else. I hope she feels better soon!

Poor Clementine! There could be a couple of things causing her pain. I'm not sure if she is spayed or not, but if she is intact, then it could be she has a pyometra causing her pain. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. It could also be that she has injured herself, has pancreatitis, or could have a tumor. Because I can't see her in person to rule these things out, which are extremely serious, I think it's best she sees a vet now. The vet can diagnose the cause of her pain, and can treat her for it. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Hello, I'm sorry to hear that Stella isn't behaving like normal- it does sound like she could have some abdominal pain and/or weakness with what you're describing. My Chihuahua is acting strange, not active, and yelped when moved?

If she cried out in pain, I recommend to have her examined. It's possible she hurt her neck or back in the tub last night but it could be unrelated. She sounds like she is not feeling good. Since she can't talk and she may be in pain, it's best to play it safe and have her examined today. I hope she gets back to normal quickly!

Poor Little Man. I recommend to have an x-ray to look for evidence of disease in his spine. This sudden pain could come from many things including intervertebral disc disease, discospondylitis, an anal gland infection or a pinched nerve. The x-ray could show evidence of the first two diseases. Discuss start medications like steroids and muscle relaxants with your vet as well. Have the anal glands checked as well. An omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs may also help but will not control the symptoms alone. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
