Is the Caucasian Shepherd the best guard dog for protection?

Hi I was wondering is the Caucasian shepherd a good guard/protection dog and is it the best if not can you tell which dog is the best at guarding and protecting. Keep in mind there can only be one dog that is the best so don’t give me all different breeds. Thanks!

There is no agreed-upon consensus in the dog world as to which one, single breed is "best" at this - so I'm afraid it's not really possible to give you this kind of answer :) Much also has to do with the particular breeding lines you get your dog from, as well as the way the puppy is raised and trained.

A Caucasian shepherd would be a very reasonable breed choice for a guard or protection dog, so if this breed appeals to you, go for it! Depending on your lifestyle and specific needs, you could also consider a Great Pyrenees or German Shepherd. If it's important to you that the dog be a good protection dog, I would also strongly recommend seeking training from a professional in your area to ensure that the dog understands what you want.

There is no way to answer this question 100%. There are many breeds that are great protection dogs. Some examples: German Shepherd, Caucasian Shepherd, Cane Corso, Belgian Malinois, Pit Bull, Doberman Pinscher, German Pinscher just to name a few. Your decision needs to be based on what breeds are available in your area (or if you are willing to import one) and if they come from "protection" lines. Regardless of what lines the dog comes from or what breed you end up actually getting, the main thing you need to do is have the dog professionally trained as a protection dog.

Here is a link for you to look at regarding Caucasian Shepherds. I think it is a good choice for a protection dog as long as it will fit in to the rest of your lifestyle.

Caucasian shepherds are very good guard dogs, and have been bred and trained to do such for many years. Many of the guardian breeds (Anatolian shepherds, Caucasian shepherds, great Pyrenees, etc) have natural instincts due to their historical work as sheep guardians that were mostly kept as dogs left to be independent on work on their own without human interaction.

The thing with guard dogs, is any dog, regardless of natural instinct, is going to need at least SOME training to know what/who to guard, and when guarding is appropriate. Each dog is going to be an individual as well, so even if a breed as a whole is used mainly as a guardian type dog, an individual may be more or less naturally inclined toward it with or without training.

As guard dogs can be dangerous and harmful to the wrong people without any training, training is always best regardless of breed choice.

Will my German Shepherd protect me even if not trained as a guard?

Every dog is different. While some breeds are certainly more prone to being protective than others, no breed of dog has members that are universally going to be protective. I have seen little tiny poodles that offer better protection than some German Shepherds, and the other way around as well. Training a dog to be an effective guard dog takes just that, a considerable amount of training and the correct about of exposure. German Shepherds are certainly considered one of the most common dogs used for this purpose.

What guard dog is best for a single, first-time owner in an apartment?

Great question! This is a bit of a tough question in that a number of breeds of dogs who are good guard dogs are also difficult. For example, a German Shepherd. Good guard dogs, but require a lot of training and are not for a first time dog owner. If you don't know how to handle them, they can be aggressive to humans and small animals. They are also high energy dogs. Personally, I would recommend a Golden Retriever. They are absolutely lovely dogs, extremely loyal, very easy to train, excellent with humans and small animals, and if need be, could defend the owner. I had a Golden for 12 years, and she was honestly the best dog I have ever owned. So sweet and caring, but I knew that if I was ever in trouble, she would defend me. Goldens are a large breed dog, and large breed dogs can be intimidating to strangers. My Minnie would bark if someone came to the door and knocked, but otherwise didn't bark much. Sometimes a bark is enough to scare someone off. I would look into getting a Golden Retriever for the reasons I listed above. I hope this helps!

Which farm dog is best: Caucasian Ovcharka or Tibetan Mastiff?

The Caucasian Ovcharka has a better temperament and is more affectionate I think. It is also a little more relaxed and should make a better companion. They both are excellent livestock guardian dogs. They both need to be trained and socialized and learn the farm boundaries and who and what they are to guard. Are Huskies good guard dogs, or are there better breeds for protection?

That would ultimately depend on what you plan to achieve with you guard dog. Husky's are certain large, loud, and have an acute sense of hearing. They appear to be scary to some people. These are all characteristics of good guard dogs. However, Huskies are not the easiest dogs to train. If you are trying to obtain a guard dog that will not only have the abovementioned characteristics but also are somewhat easier to train, I would think more along the lines of German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, or Doberman Pinscher.

Which livestock guardian dog breed is best with my other dogs?

That answer is going to depend more on the individual dog's temperament and socialization- reaching out to breeders in your area is a good idea to see what early socialization they do, if the litters are raised with other animals/dogs, etc. Any puppy, if socialized well enough, should be OK to get along with your current pets. Most active working guardian dogs also spend most of their time with the flock than with other dogs (unless they are also guarding), but the key is to lots and lots of socialization early on so that your guard dog recognizes your pets as "friend".
