Is it safe to carry my paralyzed dog to grass or concrete?

I think it's a great idea to have a wheelchair made for Bruno so he can "walk" again! There are a number of owners who do this for their pets, and it does help improve their quality of life. Poor Bruno!! Distemper is terrible disease and he is lucky to have survived. The best way to prevent pressure sores and scratches is to keep him on soft surfaces and make sure he is rotating every two hours. One effective way to do this is to have a sand pit on the property. You can enclose the sandy area, which will give him enough room move around. Another option is to bandage over the hips and other areas that tend to get scratched. You can bandage with extra padding (like roll cotton) to help keep him from getting pressure sores. You can also put a t-shirt over the hind end to help protect it. However, you would need to change the bandages everyday and they can be difficult to keep from slipping. I hope that helps and all is well with Bruno.

Hello, sorry to hear about Bruno. Yes those medications are safe and you should follow the orders from your veterinarian. No you should not let his injured leg be in mud or become soiled for the next 10-14 days until it heals. After his leg has healed, he can go back to walking outside. I hope he has been seen by your veterinarian to determine the cause. If the underlying reason for his difficulties have been thoroughly investigated, & exercise in not contraindicated, then walking is always good. Keeping Brian on grass, walking with a harness rather than collar, or using a lift assist vest would all keep him from injuring himself. Supervised swimming might be beneficial, as well. You might talk to your vet about a certified veterinary rehab. specialists in your area. All the best to you & Brian.

Without knowing the exact diagnosis and why she is not able to walk now , it would be very dangerous to recommend physiotherapy. If you have not done so yet, Lucy needs to be seen by a veterinarian and the cause of the paralysis needs to be found, whether it is a fracture or pinched or damaged nerves or a slipped disk caused by the accident. This exam by your vet will also determine if there is any hope at all for your dog to be able to regain movement in his hind legs. Physical therapy can actually damage your dog more, if there are certain nerves or fractures involved.

Bruno's leg looks like it is in a normal position to me. Sometimes dogs that have knee pain will sure with their knees falling out to the side and slightly extended, but Bruno's leg does not appear to be in that position. Dogs with hip dysplasia can have an abnormal gait when walking or can hop with both legs together when running. If you're concerned that Bruno isn't walking normally you should have him examined by your vet.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Spike. Dogs do benefit from the mental stimulation of being outside. So it is good to continue allowing him outdoor access. However, maybe holding him in your arms would be better. It seems like he is nervous about being in the grass. I hope this information helps!
