Are calming supplements safe for my dog with diabetes and anxiety?

I can't find any information that this product would be harmful to a diabetic. The main ingredient is tryptophan, an amino acid that has ben purported to have calming effects. It has been used to treat mild anxiety disorders in dogs, however I wouldn't expect it to be especially effective to calm a dog that is acutely stressed by fireworks.

I'm having trouble finding an actual ingredient list for this product online - the closest I've seen is that it contains "essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals", which isn't very specific. So it's hard to say with 100% certainty, but in general, I would not expect a natural calming supplement like this to cause any problems or complications in a diabetic pet.

It's always best to let your regular vet know if you are considering starting any kind of new supplement or OTC medication with your pet, so I would suggest giving your vet a call just to make sure they have no objections :)

Dogs on high-quality commercial diets do not need vitamins. Dogs on homecooked diets definitely need to take a vitamin. For the supplements, I'm not familiar with Pet Natural Vermont Calm specifically but the ingredients look ok. It's true that they are not regulated, so we have to go on company reputation. The ones I know and recommend are Zylkene (different supplement) and Composure (same supplement as the Vermont ones). I like and trust the company that makes Thunderspray, so if it's helping then stick with it. The pheromone product that I'm most familiar with and feel does help is called Adaptil. Can I give my dog calming supplements with her disc meds instead of Trazodone?

There should be no harmful interactions at all between tryptophan and chamomile, and the prescription medications that your dog is currently taking - so you could certainly try this if you like. I do recommend letting your vet know that you are giving the supplement, just so that he/she is in the loop about everything your dog is taking :)

Hi there. Unfortunately, natural calming supplements like Zylkene or Composure have not been tested in pregnant dogs, so it's not known whether they would be safe to use or not. You could try an Adaptil pheromone collar or diffuser, as this should be safe and may help some with her anxiety.

Trazodone not working for dog separation anxiety. Is Valium safe with diabetes?

Valium is a relatively safe drug but if it has not been prescribed to your dog I cannot inform you to give it legally. What I can say is that for an 18 pound dog, you could give 4 or 5 milligrams and still be within the proper dosing range assuming no other drugs or bodily conditions exist that would make it contraindicated. Neither Cushing’s or Diabetes would preclude your dog from receiving, and the trazodone given together with the Valium would produce some additional sedation / anti anxiety effects but not enough to cause problems.

Hi there. Yes, in general, Zylkene is a good choice for a natural calming supplement for dogs with anxiety. However, I would also say that if his anxiety is severe, it's unlikely that a natural supplement alone will make a significant difference. If you didn't feel that the fluoxetine worked well for him, I would suggest talking to your vet about trying a different medication - just as in humans, it often takes some trial and error to find the best choice for each individual patient. Some other daily meds that could be considered would include sertraline, paroxetine, clomipramine, trazodone, or clonidine.

Calming chews, such as Composure chews (by VetriScience) may help but they are not "magic pills". You will need to modify her behavior. This may require the assistance of a certified trainer.
