My rescue puppy barks in his crate. What can I do to calm him?

Poor Chelsea! It sounds like she's quite anxious in the crate by herself - many puppies have trouble adjusting to this at first. I would recommend giving her a special long-lasting treat of some kind each time you put her in the crate, such as a Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter - this will help to keep her busy and encourage her to settle, and over time will also help with her anxiety by giving her something to look forward to when you leave. You can also try a DAP pheromone collar along with a natural calming supplement such as Zylkene or Composure to see if this helps.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buster. Some dogs will experience anxiety when crated and do not ever seem to adjust. You can give him special toys or high value treats that he only receives when crated (food puzzles, Kong toy stuffed with treats). You can also try a dog pheromone collar or diffuser. However, he may just resent the crate. In this case, I would recommend leaving him out, but in a safe area. Make sure there is nothing that he could destroy or eat and no electrical cords he can chew. Start leaving him out when you can supervise him as opposed to leaving the house for hours. Some will do better in a small room (bathroom or laundry room), while others will do well with a baby gate so they can see out. You will need to see what works for him. Good luck!

I would recommend giving him something to keep him busy. Kong toys with peanut butter frozen inside can keep dogs quite busy for a while. I would try this. You can also try the Adaptil products, which are pheromone products designed to help calm dogs down. Make sure he has plenty of toys and treats in his kennel to keep him busy. You can even turn the radio on or tv on for him while you are downstairs for noise and see if that helps.

Many dogs bark at sounds or unfamiliar objects or people, especially when they are first getting used to a new environment. If she is barking all the time, I suspect that she is somewhat anxious and "on-edge" about lots of different things - she may have been poorly socialized as a puppy, which often leads to excessive anxiety about new things and lots of barking as a result. If you think this might be the case, there are a few things you can do to help. Inside the house, you can also use a white noise machine or some other type of background noise to help block out sounds from outside that may trigger the barking. Outside, I would carry treats with you when you take Mitsu for walks. Anytime she sees something and starts to bark, call her back to you and give her a treat. Over time, she will learn to look at you for her treat when she sees something that startles her, rather than barking and lunging.
