Why is my bulldog scooting, losing butt hair, and smelling bad?

Hello. Bulldogs are just so prone to skin problems, including allergies & infections. I would have your veterinarian check Bruce's anal glands to make sure they are not full or impacted. This is generally the number one reason for scooting. But skin allergies can inflame the rectal tissue, so another reason to scoot. Finally, tapeworms can cause a dog to scoot its bottom. But with the overall scratching & blisters on his muzzle, skin allergies with a possible secondary skin infection would be high on my list of problems. Oh Bruno is a handsome guy! Unfortunately, bulldogs are very prone to skin allergies and secondary yeast and bacterial infections, as well as fold dermatitis (in the facial and tail folds). I love to use Malaket wipes in all folds once daily. If that is not solving the problem, talk with your vet about allergy treatments. Have him seen by your veterinarian. The most common, and easiest to treat, cause is full or impacted anal glands. Normally, the anal glands are emptied during the act of defecation. In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.

I'm sorry to hear Bertie is having issues. It sounds like Bertie may be having an issue with his anal glands, which can become enlarged and infected if they are filling too quickly or not emptying properly. I would recommend Bertie be seen by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his swelling, especially as infected anal glands can abscess and rupture. Poor Toby! Yes, this does sound like something that needs a vet visit. It sounds like his rear end is bothering him for some reason - the two most common causes for this are anal gland problems or flea allergies. If he isn't already on a good quality flea medication like Nexgard or Bravecto, this is the first thing I would suggest. If you're positive that he doesn't have fleas, then your vet will need to check his anal glands to see if they are overly full or infected - this is a common cause of discomfort in this area. In that case, the glands will need to be expressed, and he may need antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication if an infection is present.

Hello. It sounds like Aramis may be suffering from an anal sac infection. The soft swelling would be present just off to the side of the anal opening...either on right or left. He may continue to ooze smelly fluid out of the anal sac opening which is just inside the anus. These abscessed are painful, itchy and can eventually rupture leaving a draining home in the skin. Aramis needs to see a vet to have the infection drained and for the anal sacs to be emptied. This may require sedation as it can be quite painful. He should then be prescribed an antibiotic. Your dog may have infected or impacted anal glands. This certainly would explain the discomfort and foul smell. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible to have them checked to make sure that is indeed what is going on, expressed and maybe put on antibiotics to help him heal faster.
