My rescue dog bit me. How do I build trust with a fearful dog?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

my sister adopted a rescued dog two years ago who was abused so much by his former owner she lives alone & doesn't have much time to take him out on walks, also not many friends visit her so he isn't used to having people around now she came to spend a month at our house,i live with my parents and other sister, & she brought the dog with her some times he's friendly but other times he's not, he trust my father though he also bit me today when i tried to pet him any way i can get him to trust me?

The best thing you can do is not to force him. Just be nice to him, talk calmly and give him small treats of something he likes a lot. In time he will come around. Forcing him will just make it worse. Most dogs do better if you ignore them at first so they don't feel threatened.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.
