My dog had parvo. Can I still breed him without affecting puppies?

If Diamond lived through parvovirus she is now immune and would actually pass antibody to puppies through her milk. Parvovirus cannot be transmitted from the mother to puppies through the placenta and there is no carrier state.

Puppies can be born with parvo if their mother has parvo or was never vaccinated against the disease. Parvo can be passed to a puppy through the placenta of an infected mother. Unfortunately, the prognosis is not good when puppies are born with parvo. Should any of the puppies not suckle , have bloody diarrhea, and/or vomit and/or be lethargic, they need to be seen by your veterinarian right away.

Parvo can live for up to one year in the environment. I would not risk getting another puppy; an adult dog, yes. If you decide to get another puppy it is up to you but it would need to be FULLY vaccinated, meaning it is at least 4 months of age and has received 3-4 distemper/parvo vaccines at the proper intervals (3-4 weeks apart). Otherwise you are risking this new pups life.

I would not recommend to get the puppy who did not get Parvo. It’s possible that he may still break with this highly contagious virus. For the puppy that survived Parvo, he will likely be fine. Long term, most dogs experience no organ damage or side effects. This puppy is still shedding the Parvo virus and will continue to shed the virus for 6 months in it’s feces. The virus will live for roughly 1 year in the soil. That means you cannot take this puppy out in public where it may expose other puppies who are not vaccinated for at least 6 months. That also means your yard will be contaminated for at least 1.5 years minimum so you cannot have any dogs over to play who are not fully vaccinated or else they run the risk of contracting the virus. You don’t want to harm any other pets. He also cannot play with any dogs who are not fully vaccinated for 6 months. The vaccine is highly effective and it’s unlikely that a fully vaccinated pet will get sick (but keep in mind nothing is a 100% guarantee). There is less risk for an adult fully vaccinated dog to develop parvovirus, but it can be a very hardy virus and live for a long time on clothing or shoes. To be safe I would change clothes after coming in contact with the puppy and wash hands thoroughly. You can clean shoes in a mixture of bleach and water (1:32).

If your dog is fully vaccinated for parvo and the puppy is healthy with no abnormal signs then parvo should not be a issue. I am also assuming that your puppy has started his vaccinations, as well. If the puppy has a history of having parvo or has been exposed to parvo then you may want to delay the introduction, especially if your dog is not up to date on vaccines.

Hi there. If the puppy previously had parvo and is now recovered, she should be fine - there is really no need to "prove" she's now negative, as it's not a chronic disease. Once the clinical signs have resolved and the dog is acting normal again, they've recovered and can go on with normal life. They will also be immune to parvo going forward, much like human kids with chicken pox. :)
