My dog has epilepsy. Is Bravecto safe? What are the seizure risks?

Hi there. Yes, Bravecto is an excellent product - it's extremely safe, and very effective. It's the main flea medication that we use at my clinics, and what I am currently using for my own three dogs. In terms of side effects, we occasionally have clients report some mild lethargy or stomach upset for a day or two after giving it, but most dogs have no side effects at all. Nexgard or Credelio would also be reasonable choices.

Hello. All tick and flea products if overdosed or if the individual animal has a sensitivity can cause seizures as the drugs typically work on the nervouse system of the insects. Check with your vet about which products in your area are safe and effective. Avoid cheap products because amounts of drug aren't regulated and we often see advrse side effects with the grocery store products (or dollar store products). Also, always give as directed and don't overdose or give a different animal meds meant for your animal or vice versa. Overall zoetis products like nexguard and bravecto are good and this looks like their new product.

I am really sorry but to answer your question, there are NO natural remedies that are proven to work for fleas and ticks. They just don't work. If your dog did not do well on Bravecto there are many other products available that don't have the same active ingredient as Bravecto. You could try Simparica or Nexgard. Are you 100% positive the Bravecto caused the seizure? I hear this a lot from owners. They say the dog had a seizure a week or so after the Bravecto administration and peg that as the cause. It is highly unlikely to have been the cause that many days after ingestion. When dogs have seizures the most likely cause is underlying epilepsy. It is rarely due to medication administration. The other option is to try a Seresto collar. Many of my clients love this option and it does work well. One collar works for up to 8 months so it is cost effective too! These are different drugs and do not negatively interact, so it's OK to give the Bravecto, but it may be unnecessary. Sometimes owners will still see fleas and ticks on their dogs, but they are dead. I recommend checking to see if they are truly alive before giving the Bravecto. The topical flea products are a bit safer than the oral ones in pets with seizures. However, there will be a slight risk with just about any product you use. We have found the least amount of seizures occuring with Advantage Multi. Best of luck with your pet TJ moving forward. Take care.

Bravecto is an excellent product and is currently one of the most recommended flea and tick products by veterinary dermatologists. I think tablets work better than topical and seem to have less reactions in my experience. Topciald can be irritating and burn the area where applied which can cause over stimulation such as you described With tablets, the most common side effect is vomiting and is minimal with that medication. I would recommend trying that instead
