Why is my bottle-fed puppy's urine dark brown? Is it serious?

One of the most common reasons that urine becomes darker is if a puppy is dehydrated. If Loki is not drinking normally, that may be a concern. Food change should not cause a change in the color of the urine unless you changed from a wet food to a dry food and they are not drinking enough water to compensate for that change. Other reasons for urine color to become darker include problems with red blood cells or muscle cells. Poor girl. Unfortunately her symptoms are very non-specific towards one disease process or another. They are very vague indeed. It sounds like she is having decreased appetite and lethargy. I would have her examined by your vet to gather more clues about her condition. Her vitals need to be checked and she may need additional testing like a fecal exam or bloodwork to get to the underlying problem. She could have a number of things going on including an infection or a congenital defect. I do hope that your puppy is going to be ok moving forward. Best of luck and take care.

Poor Kai! There could be a urine infection or crystals in the urine. Certain toxins can also cause this as well. I recommend to have him examined by the Veterinarian today. It's normal for puppies to have very clear, dilute urine because their kidneys are still developing. They can also get urinary tract infections and other issues as well. I would recommend scheduling a vet visit (or telling them you want to talk about this issue when you schedule his next vaccine appointment) and using a small tuberware to catch his first urination of the morning to bring to that appointment. They can check to see how concentrated his urine is. Keep the urine in the fridge if it's going to be more than 30-60 minutes until your appointment. Good luck!

Make sure she is going regularly and not having to hold it too long and that she is getting plenty of fluids. The discoloration and increase in frequency can be signs of a urinary infection. Since everything else is normal, you do not need to get her seen as an emergency tonight, but do recommend a urine sample at your vet as this can make house training more difficult and be uncomfortable for her if left untreated.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I agree, that is some very dark urine which indicates he must not be drinking enough. You need to increase his water intake. The best way to do that is to add some chicken or beef broth to his food; use the low sodium kind. The added salt (even in the low sodium variety) should encourage him to drink more. If this dark urine continues for more than a few days you should take him to your vet for an exam and urine test.

I would recommend to get Belle's urine checked. Dehydration will make it darker but so will blood in the urine. Best to be safe. Hopefully its nothing! Please post again if you have any further questions!
