What's the best multivitamin for my allergic dog on a homemade diet?

I'm so sorry to hear that Wesson has degenerative myelopathy (DM). It is a horrible disease that we see far too commonly. There isn't any treatment that is proven to slow the progression of DM other than regular exercise. That being said, there are some recommendations for diet and supplements. The most common protocol that people have used is Dr. Clemmon's DM diet and supplement recommendations. These recipes can be tailored for dogs with food allergies to avoid certain ingredients (or even just use the ingredients currently being used), but will also have the vitamin and mineral supplements available to assure that the diet is balanced. Hi there. If you're making your own food for Charlie, that's great! This can definitely be a good way to manage dogs who have food allergies or sensitivities. But, you do need to make sure that the diet you're feeding is complete and nutritionally balanced for long-term feeding. I would recommend using www.balanceit.com or www.petdiets.com to formulate an appropriate diet for Charlie, using the ingredients of your choosing. These websites will help you determine what ingredients are needed in what amounts, and will also advise you on any supplements that may need to be added.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to skin allergies mostly due to the fact that it started after moving. Adding fish oil can be considered regardless to help with the dry skin. You can use the commercial kind for dogs. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
