My 2-month-old Lab puppy seems unhealthy. What food is best?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would be sure he is on a good quality large breed puppy food. I like Purina Proplan or the Royal Canin or Hill's Science diet puppy foods. Feed him more than the recommended amount on the bag. At 11 weeks old he should be seeing your Vet for vaccinations. Be sure he has had his stool tested for intestinal parasites and has been dewormed a few times. Parasites are a huge issues in all puppies. Good luck!

Hello, at this age, Roma should be on a good puppy food. You can use a canned or dry kibble ( or mix the 2 ), or you can moisten the dry with a little water. Just do not make it soupy as you will dilute the nutrients. At about 3 months of age, I would switch to a large breed puppy food that you can continue until Roma is 12-15 months old, then change over to an adult maintenance food. Labs have a tendency to grow too fast, and as they get older to get fat. Therefore I like to use Nutro large breed puppy dry, then switch to adult large breed, and weight management later in life if needed. I like Nutro because it’s a complete diet and lower in calorie than most of the other dog foods. Dogs like it and there are several different Nutro varieties for you to choose from. Great question! I would feed a good quality food that is specially formulated for large-breed puppies, to make sure that your pup is getting the optimal balance of nutrients for growth at this age. Royal Canin or Purina ProPlan are both good brands - Royal Canin even makes a food specifically for Labs, so it would be great choice for your puppy :)

I recommend a good quality food like Hills puppy food for large breed dogs. That has all the nutrition he needs without giving him too much nutrients which can make him fat and cause bone problems from growing too fast. I don’t feed dogs wet food, it’s not necessary. You can moisten the dry for a week or two until he can chew it well. Personally I do not let puppies be around other unvaccinated dogs until they have completed their series of vaccinations at fourteen weeks. A Labrador puppy should be on a large breed puppy food until 15months. A starter food can be used from 2-8weeks as it can be easier to soften and can be fed slightly warm.
