What are the best products to remove plaque from my dog's teeth?

I would recommend buying a rubber bristled finger brush to apply the toothpaste to the teeth. You can also try Oravet chews, which contain Delmopinol, an ingredient used to slow or prevent the formation of plaque. Oravet is typically only available at the vet clinic so you would have to go to a clinic to buy these chews. I hope this helps! Greenies can help remove some fresh plaque. However if your dog already has a moderate to high amount of plaque on his teeth, then he will need a dental cleaning under sedation. Once the teeth are cleaned you can keep plaque from attaching to the teeth by brushing regularly. This is more effective than any dental chews.

Hi. Great question! Once the tartar is there, the only way to remove it is to have a professional cleaning done with your veterinarian. This involves scaling and polishing the teeth similar to the way ours are done. The best way to prevent more build up is to brush them daily. Which can be hard. There is a food by Hills/science diet called T/D that helps with tartar as well.

Hello! She has a very small amount of tartar accumulation right on her gum lines, which is perfectly amount of plaque to develop by her age. I think with some increase in dental home care, you can probably get all that plaque dissolved and back to pearly whites! Excellent job with the teeth brushing! I would recommend trying to increase that to daily brushing and make sure that you are using a toothpaste with an enzymatic cleaner. The enzymatic part means that it still works after you stop brushing to break down the plaque and tartar. A small amount of this tooth paste put on chew toys can be a way for her to brush her own teeth as well. :) There are also diets formulated for dogs that accumulate dental plaque quickly. Hills T/D is one that I know of off the top of my head, but there are likely other brands as well. The kibbles are made in larger pieces that crunch in a way that cleans that teeth while they eat. CET chlorhexidine chews Not all of these will work but I have had some mixed success using all of these. My favorite is the Oravet chew as it employs an additive known as Delmopinol to prevent tartar formation. Oravet chews are only available in veterinary clinics so you may have a hard time finding this one online. All of the other products you can find online. I hope this helps! Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Sadly the only way to get that thick tartar off is with an ultrasonic scaler. And dogs do not stay still for this to happen awake. We also do not know the extent of the periodontal disease in dogs awake. Once the tartar is chipped away we can probe the sockets and take X-rays to determine if the roots are diseased or abscessed, which requires extraction. Leaving diseased teeth in the mouth leaves the dog with chronic pain and risk for abscesses popping through the skin. The only thing you can do at home is try to chip the tartar with your nails if Deeva will even allow you to do so. Do not get bit. You can start brushing her teeth to at least prevent further tartar build up but brushing will not remove what is there. Below is a link to the Veterinary Oral Health Council's approved products. You can try some of the products to see if they help. Also Veterinary dentists recommend a MINIMUM of 3 days a week of teeth brushing. Anything less is likely not doing anything.
