What are the side effects of Bayer tapeworm dewormer for dogs?

Yes. Any deworming medication has the potential to cause side effects in your puppy or dog. Common side effects from tablets or liquids given to treat gastrointestinal worms include loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some medications, like Ivermectin, should not be administered to particular breeds of dogs. For instance collie breeds experience seizures, muscle twitching, and hypersalivation when treated with Ivermectin. Other deworming medications should not be given to pregnant or lactating dogs or puppies under certain ages. The safest and most effective deworming medications, or wormers, come from your vet or can be obtained with a prescription for your pooch.

The reason for the second deworming 3 weeks later is to kill any tapeworms that were still immature at the last deworming and were not yet sensitive to the dewormer or if she has gotten infected again since the last deworming. Drontal is a very safe medication with very few side effects since it only affects the parasites in the GI tract. Since you didn't post a photo of what product you have then it is hard for me to say much. It does sound like tapeworms based on your description and if you got a tapeworm specific dewormer then it is the correct product. Bayer is a good, reputable company. All the dosing information should be on the bottle as should the side effects to look for. Dosing is based on weight so be sure you have as accurate a weight as you can get. Usually there are no side effects. You need to basically shove the pill down his throat and then follow that with a little bit of water to be sure he has actually swallowed the pill(s). You should repeat the dosing in 3-4 weeks. If you don't know how to give your cat a pill I suggest you watch some YouTube videos on how to do this. There is an "art" to it. If you would like to post again with a couple photos of the bottle we can maybe give you more specific information. We would also need the cat's weight. Be advised that cats get tapeworms by ingesting fleas that contain the tapeworms larva so you also need to treat him for fleas.

It is not typical to have side effects a week after being treated for tapeworms so there could be something else going on. If he hasn't had a stool sample tested for parasites then you should take a sample to your vet for testing. He could have additional parasites and need a different dewormer. Continue to monitor him and if his signs continue or progress then he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Typically tapeworms can be treated with anybody worming medication that contains praziquantel . However this could just be a side effect of the poop sitting out and insects laying eggs on the poop. Deworming should not harm your dog.
