Is it safe to use baking soda, powder, butter, sugar in dog treats?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 17 lbs

I would like to bake treats (cookies) for my dog. Some websites states that baking soda and baking powder are toxic to dogs but most recipes online have baking soda/powder in them. Is it ok to bake with baking soda/powder? Are butter and sugar safe for dogs?

Baking soda and powder if used in small amounts should be safe for your dog. I would avoid using the sugar and butter as much as possible because neither of these ingredients are healthy for dogs to eat. Remember to feed treats in moderation. Have fun baking!
