Why is my 4-month Akita puppy stumbling and struggling to stand?

Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 14 days old | 15 lbs

I have a 4 month old American akita. We flew her from ukrain and for now she’s at home in an apartment but we will move her to a house with a huge gardens and plenty space to run and play. Problem is that since she arrived we noticed that while walking she stumbles on her front feet and almost falls. And also it’s hard for her to get on her feet sometimes. Her bones kinda feel and look weird but im not sure. What can it be? Please help

Yoko should be examined by the veterinarian. She could have a developmental bone abnormality or a spinal condition. Infections in the nervous system and certain types of parasites can also cause these clinical signs. The doctor will get a better idea from the exam and may recommend some testing. From what you describe it sounds like there is definitely something wrong with Theo's musculoskeletal or nervous system. I would go back to the vet and have them examine him again, you could video how he crawls around the floor to show them. It would be good to have his legs and spine xrayed in case there is a fracture somewhere. Because he is a young dog there is the possibility that he has a condition from birth. If it was simply pain or even a minor injury I would expect the pain medications to have helped by now.

Please have Leilani seen by a vet right away. It sounds like she may be dealing with a neurologic problem, and she is likely suffering. It is difficult to give a prognosis without further diagnostics, as she could also be dealing with weakness from systemic diseases, low blood sugar, trauma, or toxin ingestion. A vet visit is needed immediately to determine the cause of his signs and guide treatment, as the prognosis could worsen drastically without treatment. My Akita dog is winded, growls, and has back leg pain. What's wrong?

Nicco does sound painful. He could have arthritis, hip problems, back problems, or may have torn or strained a ligament in his knee. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning to have this evaluated and treated. Best of luck.

What you're describing could be hip disease, spinal cord issues or even an infection. If it doesn't get better over the next few days he needs to get checked out by your veterinarian, sooner if if gets worse or he seems painful.

Why is my puppy shaking, struggling to stand, then walking fine?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Poppy! I recommend that Poppy be seen by your Vet. Possible causes are distemper virus, a congenital abnormality, toxin ingestion, trauma or a brain issue. Hopefully this is just an injury that needs time to resolve but it is hard for me to say with out examining her or seeing a video. It may be very helpful for you to video tape an episode so your Vet can help you the best they can. I hope this helps and I wish Poppy a speedy recovery!

Why is my 1-month-old puppy not walking and her back legs splayed?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zo. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. Some puppies will struggle on slick surfaces though. Try placing towels down for traction or keep her on carpet. This can help the puppy to control her limbs better in the meantime. Good luck!
