What affordable dog food brands are best for sensitive skin under $20?

Both are good foods. I personally feed my dogs Iams, so if you wanted to switch to that, it's fine to do. It's important to know when switching foods to do it slowly so that Scooby doesn't get any GI upset. Start by mixing 75% old food and 25% new food, and feeding that for a couple of days. Over the course of two weeks, gradually increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until he is eating the new food only. Other brands I recommend include Royal Canin and Hill's Science diet, but those would be pricier than the Purina One and Iams. I hope this helps!

As far as commercial breeds that come to mind, Wellness would be a good choice to meet your requirements. It is a little pricey, but I feel that it is a very high quality diet. A raw diet would also be an option, but would definitely require a significant amount of financial and time investment (though there are commercially available raw diets as well now). However, what I have found the most helpful in reestablishing a nice shiny coat is using fish oil daily. You can get the commercial ones sold online or at your local pet store. This works great. The various sensitive skin formulas on Royal Canin's website all are listed to include grains. Royal Canin diets have not been known to correlate with the development of DCM in dogs, so I would not worry about this too much. If this diet is too expensive, consider discussing alternative options with your vet. A novel protein diet may be a reasonable option but it is hard to recommend a diet without knowing what the cause of your dog's allergies are. I recommend trying to buy larger bags as they are more cost-effective and consider price hunting on various websites.

What food is appropriate will depend on how sensitive your dog's GI tract is to these ingredients. There are some over the counter foods without these ingredients in them. If the food allergy is severe, then a prescription diet available from your vet may be necessary (these special foods are made in a facility where contamination doesn't occur).
