What's the cost to dock an adult dog's tail for medical reasons?

It is unfortunately not common practice to dock tails so late in age. Most general practitioners will not perform this procedure unless the pet is less than 2-3 days of age. At this age it is considered an amputation procedure because the bone vertebrae have completely formed, as well as the nerve endings, and is a lot more costly (average ~$500-$1000 depending on your area). You unfortunately will most likely have to discuss amputation with a veterinarian and call around to local clinics in your area to see who is willing to do the procedure. We don't have any websites dedicated to this service, so finding someone is going to be something you will have to ask around for to see who is willing to perform the procedure at this stage.

Hello, sorry to hear about Sadie. It looks like the mass can be removed, however, it needs to be further evaluated to determine if it is bonging or aggressive. An aggressive mass may need a more invasive surgery then a benign mass and this would likely differ in prices as well. You should have your veterinarian evaluate this mass to determine if there is evidence of aggressive, cancerous cells. If none, a likely mass removal for this site may range from $700-1000 depending on your veterinarian fees. It could be more or less. Docking the tail is a surgical procedure, it is mainly done as a cosmetic surgery which i as many vets are against it if it has no medical reason for it. i really do not recommend having it done for cosmetic purposes, it is an unnecessary surgery that will put your dog at risk and will cause him pain just because some people decided that it has a better look. having it done at 8 weeks is even worse as it is a procedure that needs to be done under full anesthesia and a good-responsible vet will never accept having it done at this age.

Of coarse there are always individual cases where this may be true. However, in general tail docking is cosmetic and not a medical decision. This is a question that I would call around local vet clinics to find out as pricing is different at every clinic. At the clinic I work at, I would normally charge $800-1000 for the procedure. There can also be post op complications with healing which can add on additional costs. Tail amputations can be difficult to manage so I would expect additional costs beyond the initial procedure. Sometimes we have to go back in multiple times to repair the tail as this area does not receive the best circulation.

Oh no! That would be pretty traumatic to watch. I am so sorry! Luckily, the puppies are probably ok, because when the puppies are this old they don't have much blood supply to their tails, and so they don't bleed much. We prefer to do this in the clinic where we have a sterile environment in which to operate in, and have the option of giving pain medication.
